Pulp Fiction is a classic with the directing and inter-mingling of story lines. Tarantino is an original when it comes to story telling.
Another favorite modern director who doesn't follow formula: M. Night Shyamalan
"I see dead people".
Robert Rodriquez has done some good things also. He not only writes his scripts, directs, produces, edits and even composes the music in his studio. Desperado is his main success, but the sequel didn't follow his main character and he tried to hard to make it bigger.
Another movie Rodriquez directed and written by Tarantino was, "From Dusk to Dawn". Who would have expected outlaw brothers on the run who kidnap a family and turns into a vampire movie where they all fight the vampires? I would have loved to watch Tarantino pitch that idea to the producers. Every part of it worked and now is a cult classic. First time I saw Salma Hayek and was mesmerized by her dance sequence.
"Now let's kill that f*cking band".
It's twew, it's twew!
“I love hit men. No matter what I do to them I don’t feel bad”
-Marv
Sin City
The Empire Strikes Back. ...I am your Father. The movie theater exploded with Nooooo
- The Outlaw Josey Wales, Granny Hawkins says to Josey, “You can pay me when you see me again, Josey Wales”!!!
- The Searchers, John Wayne turns his back and walks away from the house at the end of the film, Best Western Movie ever made.
- The Jerk, Steve Martin tells his biker girl friend he has a “Special Purpose” between his legs that his mother told him about. He says, “My mother told me that some day I will find out what my special purpose is for...and his aroused biker girl friend quickly replies..”Well, today’s the day”!!!
- The Quiet Man, The kiss in the Wayne House between John Wayne & Maureen O’Hara.
_ Animal House, “Flounder...you screwed up you trusted us” after the boys wrecked Flounder’s brother’s car.
The first time we saw/heard: “Bond...James Bond”. (From Dr. No. of course and by the only true James Bond, Sean Connery!)
Love THE JERK. One of only 2 Steve Martin movies I can stomach, the other being Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
Love many scenes in American Graffiti, but especially the one at the end with Milner and Toad, “Yeah, Toad, we’ll take em all.” Also like the one with Milner and Mackensie Phillips going through the junk yard as he’s telling her about the different cars and why they’re there.
Also always get a rush out of the scene in That Thing You Do, where the kids first hear their song on the radio.
Not to change the topic, but most people don't realize that the music composer makes a huge impact on any given scene, as that Wagner composition did for the scene.
There are many good composers nowadays, but until John Williams came along it was all background noise that often didn't fit the moment. Google: movie music composers and you'll understand what I mean.
Any love story or sentimental ending makes us choke up because of the score. Turn the sound off and if not great acting, it's meaningless.
Ramius to Ryan; “Some things in here don’t react well to bullets.”
I know that quote’s not perfect and,
KAAAAAAAAAHN!!!!!!!!

I like a movie with a happy ending.
bump
Mr. Hollands Opus....love watching how a temporary teaching gig becomes his lifes passion. Sobbed out loud at the ending the first time I saw it & still cry at the end. Teaching is a passion when done right.
Adriiiaaaannn!
VOOOOOOOOOLARE!
My favorite Rodriguez scene, from "Once Upon a Time in Mexico"
"El, you really must try this. It's a puerco pibil. It's a slow roasted pork--nothing fancy, just happens to be my favorite--and I order it, with a tequila and lime, in every dive I go to in this country and honestly, that is the best it's ever been, anywhere. In fact, it's too good. It is so good that when I finish with it, I'll pay my check, walk straight into the kitchen, and shoot the cook, because that's what I do, I restore the balance to this country."
The best scene is the moment when Jack Lemmon screws up and the slow realization that came across Spacey's face when he knows that Lemmon just gave himself away.
My favorite line (of many) from Glengarry Glen Ross.... "You make a close, this whole place stinks with your farts for a week how much you just ingested. Oh, what a big man you are! "Hey, let me buy you a pack of gum. I'll show you how to chew it."
I did not know that about the Horst Wessel song in Casablanca. It’s nice to know that even evil murderous regimes that violate treaties, borders and human rights are still protected by international song copyright laws.
“Tomorrow Belongs to Me” in Cabaret. Just chilling.
