Many times words such as blunt, direct, frank, honest, candid, etc. are used.

I have a friend who personifies this. She can also be brutal, caustic, cutting and hurtful. Why am I still friends with her? She is a paradox who has a great sense of humor, and underneath it all, there is a person who would give you the shirt off her back. She's told me about her upbringing, and I've come to realize that this is her defense mechanism.
