These people are idiots. Can’t they take the water-soaked corn and turn *that* into ethanol?
Or are their different varieties of corn used for feed, food, and fuel?

My thoughts exactly. I don’t know of any reason why it couldn’t be used for fuel.
There are 93 million acres (old number, 10 years) of corn production. Not sure 1 million acres flooded is significant.
