Here’s the source document for the alleged 58,000 German deaths.
It appears to be Nazi propaganda.
Pat Buchanan argues that the Germans did have a legitimate claim to Danzig (ethnically and historically German semi-autonomous City-State created by Treaty of Versailles), and that the Poles were willing to cede it until Churchill stepped in with an unequivocal British guarantee to defend Poland.
In other words, Buchanan argues, Churchill wrote a check he had absolutely no means of covering ... leading to a tragic turning point in world history.
Thank you. I just asked my Polish born and raised husband about the number of Germans killed by Poles, and he replied that there were battles and military skirmishes over long periods of time and that is like where the number came from (if accurate) and no doubt Poles were casualties as well. It’s amazing to look at maps of Europe over time and see how the boundaries of almost all countries (if not all) changed radically back and forth over the hundreds of years.
Thus Churchill is the one most directly responsible for winning the war but losing the empire.
I don’t know enough to argue numbers, but the more I put myself in the Germans’ place the more I get a sick sick feeling that we demonized and destroyed a country in order to enable International Communism. Moreover, with Japan we had frozen their assets and denied them oil exports in July, 41.
You can say it’s all German propaganda, but on the other hand I no longer believe the US propaganda, so why not let us look at both sets of propaganda and decide from there? The Ukrainians greeted the Germans with flowers and viewed them as their saviors for liberating them from the Soviets.
Today is the 80th anniversary of Neville Chamberlain's guarantee of Poland's borders. Why does Buchanan think Churchill wrote the check, when it would be more than a year later, May 10, 1940, that Churchill would become Prime Minister?
