Norwegian officials are set to investigate why a cruise ship carrying more than 1,300 people set sail despite 'high risk' conditions and storm warnings, forcing an evacuation.

More than 400 people had to be airlifted to safety from the stricken cruise ship Viking Sky after it suffered engine trouble off the Norwegian coast on Saturday and was seen listing at nearly 45 degrees.

Norway's Accident Investigations Board said 'the high risk which the ship, its passengers and crew were exposed to made us decide to investigate the incident.'

The company's owner apologised to guests for the ordeal while a Viking Cruises spokeswoman said the firm would support the investigation.

Investigators are heading to Molde today, where the huge ship is now docked after it came back into port yesterday evening with three of its four engines working.

What do you get when you cross the Atlantic Ocean with the Titanic? Halfway.

900 remained on board.

50 mph is nothing. Losing power near the coast is bad.

I went on a Caribbean cruise many years ago. It launched straight into a storm front that at the time produced the most tornadoes in Florida history.

Walking the halls everyone kept bumping into each other and saying "sorry, we're all in the same boat". It was unbelievable how strong the wind and waves.

Because at that point, the force pulling her over exceeds the force workng to keep her upright.

My airwing was onboard the Independence when it was relocated from the East coast to the west coast back in the 80’s. We sailed around south America and encountered a ‘normal’ winter storm that had waves coming over the bow of the carrier 60 feet above the waterline. The waves ripped metal hand rails off the ship and even did some hull damage to one of the escorts.

The sea can be very devastating when it wants to be.

Care to back that claim up with facts? Like a CG/CB diagram?

I won’t hold my breath.

An honor that you don’t need to concern yourself with.

I was on the Enterprise when we went through a typhoon.

Except for the spray it was no big deal.

All the way forward there was a space to look forward through some small port holes. Amazing site to see the big waves and spray.

50 mph winds should not pose a threat to these cruise ships.
The discomfort comes when they stopped and went on anchor.
Something that is not planned in the cruise.

I have been on cruise ships in 50 mph winds and the lower decks might be uncomfortable as the waves smash into the side, but the upper balcony deck cabins are usually not that bad. - Tom
