Students in Kentucky took a break from calculus and dodgeball to learn so real-life skills to help them 'adult' when they leave school.
Bullitt Central High School in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, have been educating its seniors in practical skills to help them become better prepared for 'real life.'
The so called 'adulting day,' held in the school, offered students workshops covering a whole host of adult topics from cooking to budgeting.
Graduating seniors were able to choose which workshops they wanted to attend and could pick three out of 11.
Students interested in basic car maintenance skills were shown how to change a tire.
Others learnt how to whip up meals in their dorm room, presumably to help them save money and so they wouldn't have to eat out all the time.
Financial topics were also discussed from savings accounts to checking accounts, and how to responsibly use credit cards and build a credit score.
The Shepherdsville Police Department also came by and students were shown how to behave if they were pulled over by a police officer.
Members of the Army discussed potential careers in the military and the realities of army life while students took part in fitness drills.
On its Facebook page, Bullitt Central High School said it wanted its students 'to gain more knowledge and skills pertaining to their lives once they leave.'

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
We had all that kind of stuff when we were kids anyways.
It was Home Ec for sewing or cooking and shop for boys.
I took two years of home-ec and I can do anything because of it. I was taught how to camp and as lot of survival skills too.
I thought the same thing.
An electronics or dedicated electrical class would have gone a long way too. That would have never flown in college prep high.
I’m somewhat color blind. Just enough where I couldn’t quite see one of the numbers in the color dot test. So close was the answer but yet it might as well have been on the far side of the moon. I could live with being a whole range or whatever off. Being just a tiny bit deficient where it can be caught is at times kind of depressing.
I have an uncle is who is completely color blind or so I’m told.
OTOH, that matrix algebra class I took in 11th grade...
I grew up on a farm and a lot of times left to myself a lot so I learned a lot of day to day survival on the job.
but why would I want to change my cook? (from the Title)
Back in the day, wasn’t this called home economics?
They had just developed a cooking class targeted for the guys at my high school. Called it ‘Chef Special’ - I think it was only 3 days a week for only half a semester. Also took auto mechanics to keep my man-card punched.
The basketball coach taught typing, so I took it thinking I might get a bit of an ‘in’ to get some playing time. Didn’t really work but yes, the skill definitely came in handy for basically the rest of my life.
Two dads, but neither can install a new valve-cover gasket:
