Democratic socialist Rossana Rodriguez never thought she would run for office, let alone win.
But the Chicago educator and community activist may be poised to do just that after forcing a runoff in her 33rd ward aldermanic race against incumbent Deb Mell last month, making her one of six democratic socialists who could potentially join city council this year.
That shock number of openly declared socialists set to join Chicago politics comes at a time when socialism is increasingly visible in national US politics, led by the socialist senator Bernie Sanders running for president and socialist New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez becoming one the most high-profile politicians in the House of Representatives.
But the trend is happening at a local level, too, with the emergence of socialists in Chicago politics a reflection of the progressive momentum Rodriguez and other socialist candidates say could transform the way this city operates.

I seriously question whether socialism is increasingly viable in this country. With the exception of a few crazy places, if we had honest elections, I doubt any socialist would win anywhere.
I agree. With all these illegal aliens coming here to escape their socialist countries, why would they vote to bring that same economic system here?
I don’t get the “if you hate God move to a big city” equation but it seems to be true.
Maybe Chicago can serve as a warning to others, after they turn a regional mega city into a smoking ruin
they’ve already “transformed” a once-great city into a stinking political/sociological cesspool of failure
I am glad to see the Democrats finally running as the socialists they have been for decades. Socialism is an awful way to organize a population but socialism is socialism even if you call it Democrat Party. Better to lose its disguise. What is happening is the Bolsheviks are shaking out the Mensheviks. If they are successful at replacing a substantial number of shier Social Democrats in the House next year then the actual Revolutionary socialists i.e. Communists will very quickly take over the process.
Socialism is increasingly viable in direct ration to the increasing vote fraud which will be an order of magnitude greater in 2020 than it was in 2018. They got away with it clean in the last two election which were test runs. The next time will be the Real Thing. Every major Democrat run city will produce enough Social Democrat votes to sway its state and the count will be accepted no matter how obvious the fraud.
They want everything free. They actually believe it will happen here.
Does transform mean being able to pay your bills?
They’ll vote to flush faster.
Queue the West Side Story song...”Everything’s Free in America”
I worked with lots of Indians, Chinese, Russians and French in my career and most of them lamented the lack of socialism here and missed the fact that in their home countries the government decided most everything for them. They enjoyed the fruits of the U.S. economy and their own labor, but they couldn’t connect our wealth to capitalism. It was so weird.
What they need in Chicago is a reincarnation of Richard J. Daley, Chicago mayor who got things done—including, of course, getting Kennedy elected. I grew up near Daley’s Chicago. As teenagers, we could drive from our lovely suburb into Chicago and walk around town in the evening, absolutely zero crime.
Ran into Daley one day—he radiated power like you could not believe. There was a lot of graft, but the streets were clean, the trains ran on time, the place was just wonderful.
Now there’s even more graft and the city is a monstrous dumpster.
I would have told those Indians, Chinese, Russians, and the French to go back to where the f-— they came from if they thought it was so great there.
Transforming Chicago into what?
Maybe Chicago can serve as a warning to others, after they turn a regional mega city into a smoking ruin
Of course, full retard leftism would be wealth confiscation and executions of conservatives and capitalists in the streets. But I wouldn’t put that past ‘em.
That was EXACTLY what was running through my head...but I decided I’d rather continue working.
Most if not all American metropolitan areas are sh*tholes. Some are collapsing as I write this like Seattle.
