Major League Baseball doesnt market its individual players as much as leagues like the NBA and NFL, so a lot of people might not have heard of Mike Trout. But hes been arguably the best player in baseball for over five years, and now hes the highest-paid athlete in the country.
Trout, 27, is set to sign a contract extension that will pay him a total of over $430 million until hes 39 years old. Born in New Jersey, Trout was picked by the Angels in the first round in 2009. He was AL rookie of the year in 2012 and has been an All-Star seven times, baseballs MVP twice, and hes finished second in MVP voting four times.

Yup.
The duration of his contract matches exactly to that of AOC’s projection for the end of the earth.
Coincidence?
My self-centered side is glad he will only be facing the Rays seven times a season, rather than 19 if NYY or the BoSox had bought him.
Rays up!
Funny...I thought the "Mickey Mantle" of our time was playing for the Red Sox.
I don’t really follow sports anymore but I read a MSM article complaining that he wasn’t a showy player (like flipping his bat after a home run) and that baseball needed stars like him to be like those in football and basketball. Also, he wasn’t big into marketing himself like he needed to be.
Of course not. It's a 12 year deal and the world ends in 12 years, doesn't it?
Public school teachers: 0 wins above replacement.
Trout is worth it. Government schools are not.
I'm a little surprised Trout didn't want to go to a more dynamic team, and get in on some of the playoff glory. He's a sure Hall of Famer wherever he plays, so the only thing he's really missing is that World Series ring. And they can't include that in a contract. At any price.
Baseball star Mike Trout will make $430 million
Sickening, pro sports is dead to me.
He has been with the LA Angles for his entire 8 year career so few playoffs. Angles are always in the shadow of the Dodgers. If he played for the Yankees he would be the most known player in baseball. Very consistent and a good guy who stays under the radar.

I don’t care that this guy makes a jillion dollars. BUT, I DO CARE that MLB owners expect taxpayers to pay for their billion dollar stadiums. The cost of stadiums should just be part of the cost of doing business.
Obviously I’m not much into pro ball.
My wife and I do like to go to Louisville Bats games, though. It’s a lot more fun than the pros, at least for us.
What?
He is earning what his performance dictates.
Teachers, whether they are great, good, or SUCK all get paid the same.
Sports media hates MLB because it hasn’t completely devolved into a chest pounding, hulk posing, swishy celebratory dancing dog squeeze exhibition like NBA and NFL. Also, it’s much harder for baseball to appeal to the lowest common denominator fans, who generally think that scoring = entertainment.
Freegards
Forget what Trout makes. What does:
The Federal Government make on this?
California Steal?
And Anaheim?
I say good for Trout. Sure we can argue over whether any athlete is worth this kind of money, and where Trout will be in terms of performance in five years - eight years - ten years (think the Angles would have learned something from the Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols contracts) from now. OTOH, in five years this could look like a bargain.
Guys I play with will mention a prior night's Tiger's game and if I saw such and such play. Nope and I never even heard of the guy......
Parking, ticket prices and rising costs of refreshments are getting way out of line. I don't know a family can afford to take their kids to a game anymore.
Jimmy Johns and some local businessmen built a real nice little stadium near me here in S.E. Michigan where they are hosting a small four team league called the United Shore Professional Baseball league. They hope to expand the number of teams.
The team names are Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers, Eastside Diamond Hoppers, Utica Unicorns and the Westside Wooly Mammoths.....LOL!
The players are basically local and ex-college players. The intent of the stadium and league is to provide a fun baseball venue for families and their kids and hopefully give the players exposure to major league scouts. There have been several that have already been signed to major league farm teams.....
The Dodgers and Yankees drew almost four million each last season. Plus they also have very lucrative local cable network deals. While the Angels are not quite on that level they are not hurting either. This deal certainly doesn't strain their finances.
Long live ultimate frisbee!
