Former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal can now add "Florida sheriff’s deputy" to his resume.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday that O’Neal now works as an auxiliary deputy for the department. Details about his duties were not released.

“Basketball legend @SHAQ goes by many nicknames, and now added to that list is Deputy Shaq. The big man now works as an auxiliary deputy with the #BSO,” the agency said in a tweet. “Sheriff Tony sat down with Shaq and the two talked about the different ways law enforcement works to keep communities safe.”

I was more interested in the Muslim thing, actually. Even my favorite hoops player, Kyrie Irving, is a flat earther. LOL

Shaq is not a 9/11 truther

https://www.nj.com/knicks/2015/06/njs_shaquille_oneal_apologizes_for_911_comments.html

“This post was insulting and offensive, and I apologize to everyone who came across it. Once I learned that it was on my Facebook page and blog, I ordered it removed and fired the firm that posted it. I am not and never have been a “9/11 truther.’’ My father served our country and I am immensely proud of the sacrifices people make daily to keep us safe. The events of 9/11 were a horrible tragedy for our nation and it’s a disgrace that anyone would think otherwise. “

He is not a flat earther

https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/shaq-was-apparently-trolling-everyone-when-he-made-his-flat-earth-comments/

O’Neal: “No, the Earth is flat. Would you like to hear my theory?”
Harbinger: “Yeah, tell me about it.”
O’Neal: “The first part of the theory is, I’m joking, you idiots. That’s the first part of the theory. The second part is, I said jokingly that when I’m in my bus and I drive from Florida to California, which I do every summer, it seems to be flat. When I’m in my plane, and we’re getting ready to land, and I open up the window, and I’m looking at all the land that we’re flying over, it seems to be flat.”

These are supposedly ‘college educated’ people.

I don’t know what college they attended, but that college should hang its head in shame...................

... and fired the firm that posted it.

????.....Why does he have a 'firm' to post his FB stuff? If you relinquish control to a third party they can print anything they want about you, and you have to go thru hell to refute it. If a fan of another opposing team was in the firm, I can see what happened, Fans can get way out of hand...................

At least in an active school shooter scenario he’d be too big to hide behind a car.

Good man, I think. Every time I see him on TV, though, I pray for his health. That heart of his must have to work way more than mine.
I feel the same concern for Magic and Sir Charles.

True.

Maybe he can just make funny faces at the camera then.

Is cowardice a requirement, or are they willing to train you?

I don’t look for wisdom from athletes, even if educated by a so-called college.

I run into enough “college educated” people on my job, who can’t figure out how to do...anything. Just had a conversation 12 hrs ago with a college grad who had no idea that once his car was paid off, that he didn’t have to carry FULL insurance on his vehicle. He had been getting scammed by someone, for over $ 150 a month for insurance.

And then there’s the 2nd kid, who is a college student himself (!) who is not bothered by the whole college scandal, declaring that they’re businesses and can do what they want. He does not seem to understand that many of these colleges are non-profits, supported by taxpayer dollars and pay no federal taxes. Did I already mention that he is taking this semester off because he can’t afford the tuition?

I’m a trainer at this job, so I have to unravel what they’ve
“learned” and retrain them to real world things.

We’re in big trouble, this country, with what the colleges are pooping out.

Something tells me Shaq is the least of it.

Oddly enough, some of the least 'common sense/common knowledge' people I know are DOCTORS. They spent their entire first 27 years learning to become doctors to the exclusion of all else.................

That’s only true if he has/had arrest powers under Florida statute. As a reserve, I doubt that he has. The LEOSA (Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act) allows retired LEO’s the right to carry, with some restrictions, as long as the officer qualifies annually shooting his issuing departments weapons qualification course.

In many respects, some state CPL’s are less restrictive than the LEOSA qualification.

In early January, Sheriff Israel was suspended from office by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and save for possible reinstatement after a pending trial by the Florida Senate, Israel is out of office permanently. The new Sheriff for Broward County appointed by Gov. DeSantis is Gregory Tony, a Black Philadelphia native who played football at FSU and who then took up law enforcement as a profession in South Florida.

Shaq seems a decent, well-meaning sort and may make a good deputy sheriff. If nothing else, he could do much to improve the ever-strained relationship between law enforcement and the Black community. I count the recruitment of Shaq in his new role as a sign that Sheriff Tony is on the right track, with kudos to Gov. DeSantis for appointing him.

Surely he’s better than that. I have always thought so. Charles Barkley or Kobe Bryant, on the other hand, would fit right in.
