New alternative to Trump's wall would create jobs, renewable energy, and increase border security
Big Think ^ | 11 March 2019 | Stephen Johnson

“What should the U.S. do about The Wall?” is a question that’s destined to divide many Americans. But there’s one proposal for the U.S.-Mexico border that, at least in theory, seems agreeable to everyone.

A consortium of 28 engineers and scientists has proposed that — instead of building a simple barrier along the approximately 2,000-mile border — the U.S. and Mexico could work together to build an industrial park along the divide that would include desalination facilities, solar energy panels, wind turbines and natural gas pipelines. The plan would not only provide the region with border security — considering it’d be a continuous train of heavily guarded industrial facilities — but also energy, water and jobs.

In a white paper, the team called it a “future energy, water, industry and education park” that “will create massive opportunities for employment and prosperity.”

“Just like the transcontinental railroad transformed the United States in the 19th century, or the Interstate system transformed the 20th century, this would be a national infrastructure project for the 21st century,” Luciano Castillo, Purdue University’s Kenninger Professor of Renewable Energy and Power Systems and lead of the consortium, told Phys.org. “It would do for the Southwest what the Tennessee Valley Authority has done for the Southeast over the last several decades.” …

You don’t seem to have connected the dots and instead have assailed me with a series of coincidental unrelated matters. Their presence in Trump’s agenda does not make them “intertwined” to the point where one point automatically must conjure some other point where they do not actually coincide.

BTW, Trump is not an autocrat who can achieve his goals by fiat.

Warm bodies with firearms does not “heavily guarded” make either way.

Yeah, what we really need to stop the illegal invasion is renewable energy at the border.....

Enter the environmentalist’s.

Oh wait, it’s “renewable energy” so the environmentalists are told to STFU about that, because their benefactors are so heavily invested in it. It’s only the mean oil companies that catch grief over dead birds.

A program to purport to build a border barrier is an ADMISSION that WE NEED A BARRIER. This proposal is DOA -- only a wall is a wall. Thanks Olog-hai.

RESTORE SOVEREIGNTY AND CITIZENSHIP VALUE

WHY ARE WE ALLOWING CITIZENS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES
WHO ENTER US ILLEGALLY GRANT THEM RIGHTS
THAT THEIR COUNTRY DENY US HAVING
WHEN WE ENTER THEIRS LEGALLY TO VISIT OR RETIRE ???
It’s time we consider illegal entry by any person who is a non Mexican citizen illegally entering the United States through the US Mexican border a defacto Mexican citizen with limited Mexican constitutional rights subject to their laws while transiting. As well as any Mexican citizen entering illegaly exempting those who do so legally and meet US citizenship requirements. All subject to reciprocal citizen treatment a citizen of the United States receives in Mexico through the Mexican constitution on citizenship .

Besides being unable to vote one must also be a citizen to own land and Mexico is very restrictive about granting citizenship. Because of that a US citizen besides not being able to vote, and cannot have title in their name to any land property in Mexico. And until that is changed the US and the affected state should consider making that reciprocal. Prohibiting any illegal entrant employment, voting, and land ownership privileges fully enforced ..
In other words Sneak into this country no job, no voting, no landowning, and eventual expulsion.

Hey good hearing from you.

Just want Trump to live up to his campaign promises.

I think these issues are why Trump is president right now. Not Hillary.

Nor Cruz. :)

Whose “brilliant” idea was this? We don’t need an industrial park, solar farms, movie theaters, bars, strip clubs, or anything else along the border — just a simple wall. Pronto. It’s hard enough to get that approved. It’s just a way to stall the wall. I can’t believe the idiots we have in Congress. I’m so tired of this charade.

I can see the thousands of Mexicans showing up for work and then leaving from the other side into America. Unless, of course, they had a wall to prevent it. Here’s a thought - just build the wall and don’t worry about the industrial complex.

WTF??? How in the hell would this secure our border and make us a sovereign nation again.

Secondly, why the eff do we need Mexico to help us with this or any other project along the border. The help would be 99% funded by the US and built by wetbacks.

My cow died, I don't need their bull.

Easy there.

You’ve been here longer than I have been, but not by a whole lot.

And I have possibly been supporting Trump longer than you have. Since actually, about a month before he rode down that escalator to announce his candidacy.

However, Trump has NOT yet delivered on the two biggest reasons I decided so early, I would be supporting him.

Those two issues are our (terrible), and ever-worstening trade inbalance with China. Now at the worst level EVER. In human history. The worst.

And our undefended, even now after how many presidencies since Ronald Reagan was in office, southern border. With somewhere around 50,000 new illegal immigrants sneaking across EVERY SINGLE MONTH.

Our even-now unprotected southern border.

Those two issues are big. Big.

It is time to fix them. Trump made those two issues big, himself. They were part of the reason, so many people have supported Trump so strongly, for so long. They are reasons WHY HE WON.

Now kindly back off with your criticism just a bit. Ok?

I get that you think I am just whining.

Nope. It is long past time, for these two isues to be resolved.

This is what Ann Coulter was saying.

I know, I know. But she is partly right, in my view.
