Applicable on this planet as well.However, Opportunity relies on solar panels to keep its batteries charged.

In 1976, I was at NASA in Houston when the Viking mission landed and I saw the first images as they came through. The relay of the images were done in vertical strips and Viking was very slow to send them.
While on the tour I noticed a table in a corner where they had a small display of their new program they were working on called, "The Space Shuttle." They showed a plastic plane-looking like deal sitting on top of a commercial jet.
It was in the words of Spock, "fascinating."

Perhaps it crashed while getting into position for a dramatic selfie? No, it’s a machine. Only humans would be that dumb.

That looks amazingly like any desert on Earth.
Creation is awesome!

"With the mission originally planned to last 90 days, the 5,111-day Oportunity mission is, perhaps, the best return-on-investment any government program has ever seen." You can mostly thank solid state electronics, chips.

We’ll know when space travel becomes mundane and an
everyday occurrence when it’s covered in graffiti.
The favorite drink of the Mars colonists?
The MarsTini a mix of gin, vermouth, and rocket fuel.
Stirred, not shaken. Too dangerous to shake.

A Mars Rover's Lament
All day I faced the Martian waste without the taste of water;
cool water.
At JPL the jerks at work sip Evian: I die for water;
cool clear water.
The nights are cold and I've been told each star's
a pool of water; cool water.
But with the dawn I'll switch back on
and MastCamBate for water; cool water.
Load an infra-scan; exploration is the plan;
you're a robot not a man and the broken rocks can stand for water; cool clear water.
MRO, can't you see that big green tree
where water's runnin' free and it's waiting there for
Error. Stack overflow.

I was running a pro photo lab in Canada during the Viking landings. I called NASA and asked if I could have a set of slides from the Viking pictures. They said they normally wouldn’t provide those for people outside the country, but they did it anyway, for free.
I made 40x60 enlargements from them as office decor. They were stunning.
