History of the Pontiac GTO: 1964-

The name, which was DeLorean's idea, was inspired by the Ferrari 250 GTO, the successful race car.

It is an Italian abbreviation for Gran Turismo Omologato ("grand tourer homologated"), which means officially certified for racing in the grand tourer class.

But in reality, the Pontiac GTO was never really a certified Grand Tourer race car. Internally, it was initially called the "Grand Tempest Option", one of many automobiles in the Pontiac line up with a 'Grand' in it.

Despite these things, the GTO is one of the fastest cars ever manufactured by Pontiac.

Neighbor had a new ‘64, one of the first in the area. A volunteer fireman, it was always a treat when he responded to a call. No doubt improved his participation. Almost incline a feller to become a firebug.

I am the second owner of a 67 GTO and have owned it for over 30 years. The car was originally purchased at Weinrach Pontiac in Las Cruces, NM.

I went with a friend to pick up a 66 GTO at a dealer in Crestview, Florida. He had ordered a 4 barrel version and ther was a waiting list.

They got in one with the 3 two barrels and told him he could have it if he wanted. He took it. I drove with him back to school. It flat out was brutal.

I cannot imagine what one of the 700+ HP cars available now must be.

I found these at the monthly Flea Market here Sunday. I bought a new 1965 GTO with the Tri-Power 389 and raced it for 3 years Northern Calif & Southern Ore...

Thanks. I don’t think I’ve ever even been in a GTO. Once owned a Firebird. 1983 6 cylinder with 5-speed stick. Strange, I know. Had buckets and t-tops.
