A video showing a rodent trapped in the change dispenser of an MTA MetroCard vending machine is just the latest indignity for Big Apple straphangers.
The roughly 10-second clip posted to Instagram by user subwaycreatures shows the pest struggling to lift a clear plastic cover that kept it trapped inside the change return slot of a ticket machine at an unknown subway station.

Can you imagine putting your hand in, not paying particular attention, to get your change and encountering a furry thing against your hand? And then seeing what it was? As if the NYC subway system didn't have enough problems--stinking homeless people stinking everyone else out of a subway car as they sleep on the bench, breakdowns, delays, maniacs shoving people onto the tracks, panhandlers walking down the aisles, ferals swinging from the subway bars---now you have a rat-dispensing farecard machine!
The bigger question is, what did someone put in the slot, to receive a rat, as change?

How did Michael Cohen get in there?
The Rodent Who Never Returned.
You must go take the subway sometimes? Thanks for today’s big laughs.
I recall an old cartoon with Opus the penguin standing in front of one of those machines.
“Twenty bucks and I still haven’t changed a bit!”
A Guinea pig and two gerbils.

Keep the change!
He never returned, he never returned
and his fate is still unheard
stuck in a change machine
‘neath the streets of Boston
His fate he never returned...
I don’t know why, but I am thinking of a Far Side cartoon with some guy in a lab coat standing in front of the machine...
At least it wasn’t an ROUS!
Gov Cuomo?
“Hey - we’re all out of WHITE rats!”
Hahahahahaha...perfect!
I think Gary Larson himself would smile at that one...:)
Well it appears to be working! But anybody who understands vending machinery realizes that a mouse is not going to get into one of these machines and just drop down a coin slot.
That said, NYC does have its rodent problems. Cockroaches too - big ones! In my building, it is forbidden to leave any kind of food in the office other than what is securely locked in a drawer, in a refrigerator or vending machine. For the vermin will find it. I made the mistake of leaving a package of food on my desk and next morning, there were scores of little bite marks all over the packaging. If I wasn't paying attention, I would have eaten that food and the thought of that makes me gag. How do rats find a way to get on my desktop? I'm not sure I want to know.
Along came the IRT, a' cannonballin' through,
from 242nd Street to Flatbush Avenue...
