Captain Marvel is going higher, further, faster at the box office. The Marvel film easily soared past its competition for the biggest opening weekend of 2019 and the first title of the year to open to more than $100 million. It won the box office with an estimated opening total of $153 million in ticket sales at 4,310 theaters in the U.S. and Canada from Friday through Sunday. It marks the seventh biggest opening for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the second-biggest debut of a new Marvel character on the big-screen, behind only last years record-breaking Black Panther.
Holdovers How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Tyler Perrys A Madea Family Funeral take second and third place respectively. In its third week at the box office, the final film in the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy continues to hover near the top of the box office, taking in an estimated $14.7 million across 4,042 theaters. A Madea Family Funeral also marks the end of an era as Tyler Perrys final Madea film, and it firmly takes third place in its second week with an estimated $12 million across 2,442 theaters.

I don’t know when it was released but I highly recommend “They will never grow old” a WWI documentary, amazing what they did with old film to make it look and sound modern. I saw it mid week and was the only one in the theater so my guess is it won’t be around much longer.
The problem with captain marvel isnt something related to the movie. Its the character itself...
The movie definitely has pointless pandering but nowhere near the level of Star Wars garbage. Most of this was wedged into the second act and didnt need to be, but it was not an entire subplot that purely was there for pandering and served no purpose like Last Jedi.
The problem with Captain Marvel is shes frankly just not that interesting, in the comics or the movie..
The big problem with the whole I am woman hear me roar, even with a cliche fight scene with Im Just a Girl blaring, is it cheapens the character...
This is a woman who had already overcome any negative being told
You cant do it nonsense by men long before she got powers. For gods sake she was a fighter pilot... so the whole men telling you you cant do it doesnt play.. shed clearly passed that up long before she was a super hero so trying to play the angle just is pandering.
The moments arent franchise or movie killing, but they are definitely awkward and forced, and frankly not needed... trying too hard.. imho.
The third act though is a mess, but as I said if you like Marvel films you will likely enjoy it.. its not their best film, not even close, but its not their worst either... its a MEH.
However there is no doubt that Captain Marvel is a step down for the MCU in terms of Ironman being the pointman to Captain Marvel. And its not the actress or the acting its the character just isnt that interesting, never has been.
Another junk, crap, sh*t “stupor-hero” movie, seen by empty-lifed airheads, morons, idiots and lowlifes.
It was always going to be the end of an era as the actors and actresses contracts end and they need replaced. Saw th movie have left my view in other postings (13)...
The issue as have always seen it is Captai Marvel just isnt an interesting character. Never has been in the comics, no matter how much girl power and forcing it on the public marvel has done with her, shes just bland always has been.
Trading Iron Man as the main character in MCU for Captain marvel was always going to be a step down, wokeness or not
You nailed it. This vision of women turns women into sex dolls who can be used and forgotten.
Other than RDJ, I think other actors could step in. I was more along the lines of the era of just fun MCU movies. Homecoming with the annoying MJ character was the first warning sign.
Not sure when CM was tagged as the future. Did that pop up just within the last year? If CM is a hero with no weakness what drama is left for the MCU? Honestly Black Panther would be a better leader of the next stage of the MCU.
Yes, that may be true, but that sure doesn’t seem to be the way they have been promoting the film.
I think the film succeeded despite the social justice branding, not because of it.
Agree with everything you said.
Marvel tried pushing the Inhumans to no avail, and Captain Marvel is their newest You will take this character and you will like it push.
Consider the “ideal’ woman in any mind, male or female pre 1970s. She had traits that made her desirable to a mate. A place to fit in. Now she sits alone in a home she paid for with her take out and a Budwiser...
The problem with box office records is they have no relation to quality of product. It’s all about how much hype they can generate. They only need the customer one time.
I’d much prefer to see post-viewing statistics. Were you satisfied with the movie? Was it all you expected? Will you buy the DVD? etc
You are often wrong but never in doubt: As usual, you categorically and simplistically group everyone in a single unit.
At the turn of the Millennium, I perused, as a personal experiment, the various lists of “100 Greatest Books” and “100 Greatest Movies” of the 20th Century:
My favorite book (excluding the Bible), The Lord of the Rings, did not make any of the lists (it was before the movies made its inclusion acceptable to the condescending intelligentsia), except one, barely, that put it at slot 99 or so. None of my other favorites made a single list. The usual suspects, which I dislike or abhor, such as Catcher in the Rye, made all the lists.
The reason is not, as you so ineloquently argue, because people like me are invariably adolescent or snowflake in attitude.
It often has to do with basic temperament. “Real-life” novels bore me because I already live in real life; I know what it is, and do not need a further dose of it.
Science Fiction and Fantasy appeal to the vividly imaginative minded, not the stolid concretist minded. (See how gratuitous insults work in reverse?)
Lewis and Tolkien cherished Nordic Myth, and shared that passion as academics. An ignoramus like you would have denounced them as adolescents and snowflakes (if they were not, by the bye, famous). (Tolkien also liked science fiction, especially by Asimov.)
Leftism, from Marx on, has systematically eradicated religion and mythology from society. Things like comic books have filled the void. They are often not great, but they satisfy the desire that once was provided by story-telling and myth-making.
Furthermore, movie soundtracks have also filled the void left by the eradication of Common Practice music from the “Classical” repertoire, again a deliberate act by Marxists and Nihilists to destroy natural beauty in music (see Schoenberg, and the Atonalists).
The Captain America trilogy, besides being well-written movies in the genre, had above-average film scores as well. Wonder Woman had a superb film score.
Most of the attention charging an SJW motive has been given to the central character; that is inaccurate.
Carol Danvers was trained military from her introduction in 1968, and overtly feminist from her empowering with Kree DNA in 1977 (as Ms. Marvel); that is not a result of the current SJW fanaticism.
The alteration of the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, from a noble male warrior and leader to an even-more-noble female scientist and anti-warrior is such a result. The alteration of the engine from a weapon for war of male villain Yon-Rogg to a device for peace of female hero Mar-Vell is also such a result.
But what is done with the all-time villainy of the Skrull Race far exceeds those two politically-motivated revisions.
Leftists are the racists with their Cultural Marxist Identity Politics - and this was beyond egregious. The Skrulls go back to the dawn of Silver Age Marvel Comics (just after they changed their name, and began once again producing super-hero comics): The Fantastic Four #2 (in other words, the second issue of the first super-hero magazine by the new brand!): “The Fantastic Four Meet the Skrulls from Outer Space” [January, 1962]. They were, from the beginning, ruthless and evil villains.
This was blatant (pseudo-)historical revisionism to send the real SJW message of the movie: Illegal Alien Invaders (Skrulls), who just happen to look different from Us (Humans, Kree), who are more noble than we are in every way, who just want a home of their own, and who are forced to hide within our society because we are just so nasty and selfish, are really just harmless victims of imperialism disguised as patriotism.
I wonder: What is the meta-message to America, to Deplorables, and to President Trump? /sarcoff
The movie was just lame. It was a chick flick. And I say this as a man who has over 250 super-hero DVDs. It was just a lame chick-flick. Don’t waste your money.
It was projected to do 180 million
But it’s a superhero movie. Reality is suspended anyway. Are spiders angry about Spiderman?
“It’s wrong to inflate humans powers to spinning webs when everyone knows humans can’t spin webs!”
Most superhero movies aren’t written with an overt agenda as this is, as are most movies now that show women in these roles.
Shouldn’t the title be “Captain Marvelette”?
To be honest I will not judge the movie till I seen it with with my own eyes, just the same when wonder woman and even black panther came out just saying.
