Yes I also remember those trees and the the rotating light.

In the store. He started out the garage, moved inside to paint and retired from appliances (at 42 years old). People were amazed that he was retiring from Sears at 42 (although he still worked building homes in upper Michigan and later head of maintenance at MGM Grand in Las Vegas).

Don’t know about you, but I spent most of my time playing outdoors.
Yes, but what kind of play? Genocidal cowboys and indians?
Cops and robbers with ersatz handguns?
Shooting with, gasp, BB guns?
Spinning hula hoops with salacious body-thrusting?
Even, god forbid, playing ‘doctor?’

Yes I am afraid you are right. However, I purchase two Erector sets for my son (for me actually) and I will be putting them together soon. I only regret not getting the electric football game shown in the Sears Catalog and the Stombecker slot car racing set.

Yes and when slot car racing sets became popular, I believe there was a decline in the sales of electric trains.

They show a godawful aluminum tree on rotating stand with a lighted color wheel my mom insisted on getting. Looked like something out of Goodfellas.I remember the first time I saw an aluminum tree with the rotating color wheel- I was overwhelmed. I sat by the color wheel - I have a vague recollection of figuring out part of it was hot the old fashioned way - and soaked in all of the color and... and... "shinyness."
In my defense, I was about four or five years old.
Later on, I realized it was in no way comparable to my favorite aunt's real tree, which was always large, tastefully decorated and beautifully lit. She and my uncle dropped some serious coin on their tree every year, and only after he passed away did I realize that the tree was there not for them but for all of their nieces and nephews.
I think mom and dad got most of our toys from Sears back in the early, hungry years. Once the catalogs were discontinued, Sears became sort of an afterthought for my parents.

Today, practically the only things kids do are play with those toys from the Sears catalog instead of playing outside like we did." "What a sad time, in so many ways.
"same story different decade." And the results of those failures can be clearly seen in our society today... And tomorrow will be worse...

For those not old enough to remember, these catalogs were about 1” thick, so they were LOADED with toys and other items.
