Joshua Nerius became privy to his parents anti-vaxxer convictions only after he contracted measles himself at 30 years old. Now hes speaking out against parents who hold similar beliefs, calling them people who want to spread fear.
What began as a rash and high fever in the spring of 2016 was later discovered to be none other than measles a highly contagious, and often life-threatening disease thats become increasingly rare since the introduction of a vaccine in 1963.
It was only after an emergency room doctor told Nerius his condition strongly resembled measles that Nerius asked his mother if hed been vaccinated. She responded with a thumbs-down emoji.
Anti-vaxxers, or, those against vaccinations, are often considered to share more of a fringe mindset, often holding steadfast to the belief that vaccinating children can lead to afflictions such as autism. While this claim has been disproved by many reputable sources, fervent anti-vaxxers argue the denial is a conspiracy orchestrated by Big Pharma.
Dr. Paul Offit, who is both a professor of pediatrics at University of Pennsylvanias Perelman School of Medicine and director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia, spoke to CNN about the children he treated during 1991s measles outbreak in the City of Brotherly Love. They were absolutely miserable. And occasionally, they were dead, he said, referencing the nine children who died as a result of the outbreak.

I knew someone who had chicken pox a couple of times as a child, then developed shingles as an adult. I remember he told me that his Dr. had told him that because he had multiple occurrences of chicken pox, he was more susceptible to shingles as an adult.
Oh no. Bad news for a Monday morning! I wonder if I get the shingles vaccine it will help?
Newborns are not low risk. It can be contracted through childbirth and breastfeeding. Contracting HepB in early childhood puts them in the highest risk category for chronic HepB and liver cancer as adults.
Drug use is epidemic and drug users lie about everything. A needle using mother would be far more worried about keeping her habit secret and safe than she would about her child’s health.
And playgrounds and beaches are full of discarded needles anymore.
Val, if less than 20,000 people get Hep B a year, it is extremely unlikely any baby will get it from childbirth or breastfeeding. This especially CAN NOT HAPPEN from any woman giving birth or breastfeeding WHO DOES NOT HAVE HEP B, which is 99.99+% of native born, fertile women. However, 15% of legal and illegal immigrants have Hep B.
The prevalence for HBV in the United States has been estimated to be approximately 0.4%. However, these estiamtes have been based upon surveys conducted in samples in which population groups with high prevalence of HBV infection, namely foreign-born minorities, were underrepresented. Voluntary screening data indicate prevalence in excess of 15% in some of these groups. Recent immigration trends suggest a substantial increase in the number of Americans with chronic HBV infection.

Also, if we do the blood test on mothers, we can know if the mother has Hep B. If she does, the baby already has a chance to have it, because the mom has it. If not, the vaccine can be given to the baby at birth.
Theres absolutely no logic in giving a vaccine to someone not at risk.
Whats funny is that I was told by a nurse that I didnt need to get the flu vaccine one year. She said only the elderly, immune compromised, and children needed it. I asked her if she had it, and she said she did because she was a healthcare worker. I then asked her how long would these strains keep me feeling miserable, to which she stated 2-3 weeks, but my body would easily handle it.
At that, I looked at her and said, Why would anyone want to put up with three weeks of feeling bad when they could have likely prevented it with the flu shot for $25?
She had no rebuttal.
A breastfeeding drug user can become HepB positive after giving birth and pass it to her child. Pre-birth testing doesn’t prevent post-birth exposure.
Nor does it solve the discarded needle problem.
These odds do not justify pushing the Hep B shots on the first day of birth for all.
Its simply not supportable by the threat frequency. Your argument is just as valid for giving one-day olds the rabies and anthrax vaccine.
From the CDC:
Currently, an estimated 2,000-5,000 persons in each U.S. birth cohort will die as a result of HBV-related liver disease because of the 5% lifetime risk for HBV infection.
Pain at the injection site (3%-29%) and a temperature greater than 37.7 C (1%-6%) have been among the most frequently reported side effects among adults and children receiving HepB vaccine (8-12). In placebo-controlled studies, these side effects were reported no more frequently among vaccinees than among persons receiving a placebo (11,12).
Based on reports to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS), the estimated incidence rate of anaphylaxis among HepB vaccine recipients is low (i.e., approximately one event per 600,000 vaccine doses distributed).
So the actual disease risk for US persons is 5% (and this number is somewhat illegal immigrant driven) but the vaccine risk is hundreds or thousandths of a percent.
Infected children seldom develop symptoms so the unrecognized disease just slowly destroys their liver until it’s to late to save them except through liver transplant. So that 5% risk is a death sentence for young children, but not adults who almost always present acute symptoms and get treated. That’s why we vaccinate babies.
Here is a nice little paper on the epidemiology of HepB

Forgot to mention that since the virus is present in saliva, slobbering infants and toddlers can and do infect their peers.
The infection rate in the US doubled in the 80’s from 4% to 8% and vaccination starting in the mid 90’s has dropped it back to 6%.
Vaccination is the best way to prevent it from becoming endemic like it is in Africa and Asia.
Theres virtually no risk until then, period. The Hep B concern is all driven by illegals who didnt get thrown out from following required immigration review. They wouldnt have been let in with it, at one time.
The other option you may want to consider is simply shooting all illegals as potential disease carrier killers.
Forgot to mention that since the virus is present in saliva, slobbering infants and toddlers can and do infect their peers.
You have no ability to use your brain, apparently. Lets read what the CDC says about your lie:
From the CDC:
Hepatitis B is not spread through sneezing, coughing, hugging, or breastfeeding. Although the virus can be found in saliva, it is not believed to be spread through kissing or sharing utensils.
All the experts she trusts says shes stupid and wrong! Even using a sloppy saliva utensil or a kiss from someone with Hepatitis B cant pass Hep B.
A breastfeeding drug user can become HepB positive after giving birth and pass it to her child.
However, the experts she trusts says shes stupid and a liar, because breastfeeding DOES NOT pass on Hep B.
Another lie that was used to justify a Hep B vaccine for a one day old that has no risk!
It’s not passed through the milk, but through cracked/bleeding nipples which is a common problem.
Do some reading on the various types of transmission depending on endemic levels of infection.
You keep ignoring the main reason newborns are immunized is that they are at the highest risk for permanent liver damage. Immunization is already lowering liver disease mortality worldwide.
And in case you haven’t noticed, dems are intent on importing the third world. Immunization is how you prevent it from impacting your family.
Stop calling me a liar, it just makes you look shrill.
First do no harm.
A vaccine is not needed at one day of age, especially for Hep B for all children.
There is no overwhelming threat to expect that. A much better case can be made for the flu vaccine.
And, your argument runs counter to scientists you support.
In short, theyd say you lie.
I wonder how they can explain this:
