One of our favorite parts of living near Atlanta was the monthly Museums on Us sponsored by Bank of America which allowed us to visit the High Museum of Art one weekend per month for free. You should check to see if they offer anything in your area.

There was a showing of Van Gogh’s works in SF in the 70s. I went five times

Just stunning

...

Yet he only sold one work while he was alive.

If it weren’t for the guilt of his brother’s wife we may not have heard of him at all.

It looks as though he used only two widths of paintbrushes to create the stippling effect. Very economic and resourceful.
Or maybe he only had limited tools with him at his brothers home.

Van Gogh never liked Starry Night.

I think Van Gogh either painted in the open air, in the cafe, or in his room at the asylum. I think his brother sent him money and then Van Gogh used that to buy his canvases and tools.

There a documentary on using software to detect copies.

An example of what the software looks for in Van Gogh's work is a low number of brush strokes to create an object (probably a facial feature in a portrait).

Thanks for sharing. I live in the Houston area. Adult tickets are $25. Should draw a big crowd. For some reason, the MFAH website does not list which specific pieces will be displayed.

The painting I would be interested in seeing is the sunflower with its label: “For Amy”...

Splendid, mairdie, and thank you! Some of his paintings were unknown to me. I love his marine ones.

Last August I visited my son in Houston. The highlight of the trip was visiting the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.

We spent all day there. After a lunch break we saw the Glassell gold collection. Room after room of incredible gold objects, more gold than I’ve ever seen before.

If you’re in the Houston area be sure to visit the museum, even if you can’t make it to the Van Gogh exhibit.

The museum of free on Thursday, but there is a fee for the Van Gogh exhibit.

Nice. I don’t get out to museums much anymore with a toddler and another on the way but maybe in a few years!

I liked all of the more famous works but I thought the miniature recreations of the period room were so neat.

Thanks so much. I’ll actually be in Houston at the right time. Never been there before, visiting relatives. Now there’s something else to do.

As a child and growing up we had a small print of "the fishing boats" in the house.

When I went to college there was a similar print in the registration office.

Good omen.
