Still remember having to get the smallpox vaccination a second time before entering college, despite having the scar on my arm from the first one.
I also remember standing in line for sugar cubes at the elementary school. Twice, I think.
The Salk vaccine was based upon supposedly “Dead” viruses. But they weren’t entirely dead, and caused far more polio than they prevented. Jonas Salk’s own daughter was infected with polio by the vaccine.
The Sabin vaccine was based upon “Live” attenuated virus (reduced in potency by passing through non-human tissue for many generations). It was much the better of the two.
The third experimental polio vaccine was created by the microbiologist Hilary Koprowski. With WHO support, he tested his vaccine on over 1 million people in the Belgian Congo (in central Africa) in 1957 including thousands of teething infants whose bloodstreams were thereby exposed to invading viruses given orally. Unfortunately, he cultured his vaccine using Chimpanzee organs, and this transmitted the SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus) to humans—where it mutated to HIV-1. Technology of the time was not capable of detecting this type of pathogen in the vaccine, but they were well aware there were “Monkey viruses” attached. Koprowski deemed the risk worth taking.
AIDS takes years to show symptoms. In 1981 the CDC first became aware of a possible new disease epidemic attacking the immune system amongst active homosexuals in New York and Los Angeles.

Lucky ones! Those of us who where boomers got the polio shot with the forever scar! My younger brother got the cube, i got the annual cube ‘booster’.

I was born the same year. I did not get a sugarcube. I got a SHOT. I was very envious of the ones who got the sugarcube. At least though, I never had to take that big hose-attached pneumatic injection gun. That one scared me to death.
