Memory serves correctly it was part of the 1996 Telecom act however, it is rarely prosecuted

The challenge today is the cost for communication services means that they can actually originated in other countries so, you can’t see them or arrest them

There was a fellow arrested last year and fined I believe $8000000 for this kind of crap but it has been four years since the last prosecution

Most of our unwanted calls are from Apple Inc. and Holiday Inn. Granted they probably are the real Apple and Holiday Inn but one would think those mega huge companies have enough lawyers to shut down the spammers using their name. They don’t so what are they getting out of it? I’m also suspicious of those apps in the article. That’s a lot of data.

Will not work.
Anonymous calls may be from your MD calling you from home. Want to block that?
Do not call list is useless.
Not a word in the article saying that they mask their true number and send you a bogus number. Are they stupid? The bogus number can be anything. It can be that of a friend or neighbor. I received calls pretending to be from ATT, a government agency, and my own number.
Blocking calls from a friend or neighbor is stupid.

If you block a call pretending to be from a far away state, they will just call you using a different number.

There is nothing the receiver of calls can do.

Software is available to call, and to mask your true number. USA laws do not apply in Nigeria.

The solution is public execution of the offenders.

There was a product available a few years ago called TeleZapper. As far as I know it worked fairly well, not sure if it’s available any more but I know how it works. For land lines.

If you can get it, find and record the 3 tone beep the phone company plays when you dial a disconnected number.. Record that to your answering machine, very first thing in the recorded message. Then record your regular answering machine message, let family and friends know what you’re up to.

When a robo dialer hears that first tone, it hangs up and removes your number as a dead phone number, you get no more calls from that telemarketer. Not often do they even stick around for the 2nd and 3rd tones, the first one is a specific pitch, the computer already knows it’s a dead number, bye bye.

My cell phone is an older 3G model, and has no call blocking feature. What I had to do is record a few seconds of silence, then use that as the ring tone for any number that calls me from outside my area code.

I don’t bother unless it’s a repetitive one, like the number that called me 44 times in one month. That one was from an area code in Washington state, where I know exactly nobody, I finally sent the state attorney general an email with the number and an explanation. They emailed me about 2 weeks later and told me it the caller was using phone number spoofing and they could not find out who it was.

So I had to set up a silent ringer, and put that number on it. They finally quit after a couple of months of no answer. Most give up after 2 or 3 tries.

Telemarketing companies are ignoring or abusing every law and requirement meant to try and curtail their bothersome activities. Politicians exempted themselves from the National Do Not Call List, these days most telemarketers just ignore it. Both my land and cell numbers are on it. I still get plenty calls.

For 6 months or so before every election I’m bombarded with politicians whining for votes. A few years ago the first time I had to deal with it, I decided OK I’ll keep a list, I’m not voting for any dumbass who bothers me with telemarketing calls...

Every single one of them...

I wouldn’t be able to vote at all...so I had to give up on that plan...the idea was to simply call them not long before the election and say guess what? I’m voting for your opponent and here’s why...no such luck, a month before the election there was nobody left to vote for...

Complaining to our congress critters won’t work, they’re the worst offenders.

I have a landline. I keep it off the hook at all times. So no scam calls. I use it for emergency if cells goes down or to call my cell if I misplaced cell phone in my home.

I block callers, on my Samsung cell, it only keeps the phone from ringing. The number still goes thru and they can leave a msg. I have recently started getting scam text msgs from American Express, Chase, etc. We can’t possibly win.

“A large number of the calls are spoofed and, if answered, produce nothing but a dial tone or a click.”

I get the same thing; I wonder what they accomplish by that.

Some spoofers now add a name. I ignore these since I don't recognize the name.

I have an obscure area code for my phone. I don’t live there anymore. Any call from that area code is spam, unless they are in my phonebook.

I can ignore all those calls.

Nothing works against a spoofed number.

Not true. I use NoMoRobo. The worst that happens is that a call comes in and caller ID says it is from my area code but says the call is from 'Boise, Idaho'. It rings once and that's it. Call terminated.

Panasonic makes cordless sets that have a built in call block feature.

I have one. It blocks only up to 30 numbers. Nowhere near enough. Unless there have been improvements done by Panasonic.
