The Rise of the Catholic Right
Sojourners ^ | March, 2019 | Tom Roberts

Posted on 03/05/2019 1:55:43 PM PST by Sam Gamgee

TIMOTHY BUSCH IS A WEALTHY MAN with big ambitions. His version of the prosperity gospel, Catholic in content and on steroids, is a hybrid of traditionalist pieties wrapped in American-style excess and positioned most conspicuously in service of free market capitalism.

Busch’s organization, the Napa Institute, and its corresponding foundation are among the most prominent of a growing number of right-wing Catholic nonprofits with political motivations. Such groups, some more extreme than others and all on the right to far-right side of the political and ecclesial spectrum, have in recent years muscled in on territory that previously was the largely unchallenged domain of the nation’s powerful Catholic bishops.

What Busch calls “in-your-face Catholicism” is often expressed amid multicourse meals followed by wine and cigar receptions, private cocktail parties for the especially privileged, traditional Catholic devotionals, Mass said in Latin for those so inclined, “patriotic rosary” sessions that include readings from George Washington and Robert E. Lee, and the occasional break for a round of golf.

Posted my “note” on-line, so its not retrievable, but I focused on their support for
“Obamacare accommodations” for abortion, pretending victims of homosexual abuse can’t be treated via therapy, and suggesting that AB Vigano’s charges against the Vatican have been “debunked”.

There you go. Wonder if others have also noticed the more mainstream Christianity Today leaning further and further to the left?

Thirty or 40 or 50 years ago, most people would have laughed at the idea of the K of C as a conservative, right-wing group. Hell, even the Kennedys were nominal members. Now, though? As the Democrat party and culture moved left and then far left, the K of C has become de facto “right wing” just by standing still as a pro-life, pro-family Catholic group. Even where I life (San Francisco), the handful of K of C members I know are politically conservative Trump voters.

I never heard of the Sojourners but when I read the article it was hard to believe the pure crap the author was pushing. Living in Southern California, I am well aware of Tim Busch and the Napa Institute.

As a Traditional Catholic, one sick and tired of the garbage coming out of the Vatican, and one who is active in my parish and a follower and supporter of Traditional Catholic organizations, we need more people of all income levels who are willing to stand up and defend our Catholic Faith.

For those living or visiting the Orange County, CA area, I recommend a visit to the Queen of Life Catholic Chapel located at the Busch Group offices at 2532 Dupont Drive in Irvine. Weekday Mass is celebrated in the Chapel as well as two Sunday Masses, both of which are Anglican Roman Rite Masses, a treat for us non-Anglican Catholics. Their website is queenoflifechapel.org.

I have heard of NCR, which has published other articles of this guy. Faithful Catholics refer to the NCR as the National Catholic Distortor.

Well, they’ve been publishing for over 30 years. But here’s what I’ve noticed. It sure a lot easier for a Gamgee like you to post THEIR stuff here than it is to post OUR stuff here. In the end, you are their bullhorn.

What I notice as well. G Bush 41 would be a flame throwing conservative to most in the Democrat Party.

Really informative article thanks. If George Soros fingers are in it, I can genuinely questions Wallis’ commitment to Christianity. Wallis by the way I believe was said to be a spiritual adviser to Obama. LOL. Okay. I could be wrong, but is a subscriber base of 35,000 adequate to fund a print magazine?

?? Respectfully, I rarely post here, maybe once per month if that. I could argue then that anyone who posts something about AOC, is acting like a bullhorn for who is really a do nothing unimportant mover in the Democrat Party.

As a matter of fact, I do argue that. Like Bill Clinton said when he left the White House, "They have the microphone now."

Look, education is to turn someone about and have them see with new eyes. A good education is to follow a model, to look for the gold, to pick your fathers well, and stand by me.

Frankfurt School. Long March.

Most seminaries are heresy factories.

I was debating theologians at 16. I know. That is my story, and I am sticking with it.

Jim Wallis has been a worshipper of Marx, no Christ, since the 1960s. Bill Ayers et al are his true brethren.

You can add Mister Yuck-It-Up at Ron Brown’s funeral, Tony Campolo.

Heh, we agree! :) I’m sick of hearing about AOC and think she is irrelevant. Harris is the one to fear.

Sounds like it. One has to ask if he just attracts fellow heretics, or actually is leading some people astray?
