The Rise of the Catholic Right
Sojourners ^ | March, 2019 | Tom Roberts

Posted on 03/05/2019 1:55:43 PM PST by Sam Gamgee

TIMOTHY BUSCH IS A WEALTHY MAN with big ambitions. His version of the prosperity gospel, Catholic in content and on steroids, is a hybrid of traditionalist pieties wrapped in American-style excess and positioned most conspicuously in service of free market capitalism.

Busch’s organization, the Napa Institute, and its corresponding foundation are among the most prominent of a growing number of right-wing Catholic nonprofits with political motivations. Such groups, some more extreme than others and all on the right to far-right side of the political and ecclesial spectrum, have in recent years muscled in on territory that previously was the largely unchallenged domain of the nation’s powerful Catholic bishops.

What Busch calls “in-your-face Catholicism” is often expressed amid multicourse meals followed by wine and cigar receptions, private cocktail parties for the especially privileged, traditional Catholic devotionals, Mass said in Latin for those so inclined, “patriotic rosary” sessions that include readings from George Washington and Robert E. Lee, and the occasional break for a round of golf.

Actually saw this magazine in my counsellor's office. Never heard of Sojourners. Apparently it has a circulation of 35,000 (is that large?). Funny thing is the article got me more interested in the Christian LEFT. Apparently the founder of Sojourners has fellow travelers in the Red Letter cult movement, like Tony Compollo. While they CLAIM to focus on Christ's actual words - it really is cover to talk less about abortion and homosexuality and turn Christianity into a social justice movement.

So he’s using his own money to express his religious and political views.

I believe that’s called the First Amendment.

True, and I was also curious whether others in the Christian community have ever heard of this magazine or have encountered this aggressive social justice revisionist movement in Christianity?

Wow, sounds like a really good group. To be honest I have really had issues with Mass attendance since Pope Francis has been in, but I continue to be an avid supporter of the theology and devotional practices of the RCC.

I don’t think he complained about the St. Gallen mafia’s secret meetings, and planning to prevent the election of BXVI, and the future election of Cardinal Bergoglio.

In case you can't tell where Tom and his fellow Sojourners are coming from:

Tom writes for the Nat'l Catholic Reporter.

Didn't like Reagan's economic policies,

Supports USCCB liberal policies and excuses their support for contraception/abortion,

He conflates Tim Busch's and the K of C's use of money with Judas Iscariot's betrayal of Christ 'for 30 piece of silver'.

Object to funding, "which fought the contraception mandate of the Affordable Care Act, even though most Catholic institutions, including the Catholic Health Association, said they could live with accommodations carved out by the Obama administration." (How Catholic of them to "accommodate" abortion...)

Pretends homosexuality is natural, as though sexual abuse is not a contributing factor and then pretends counseling can't help)

Pretends AB Vigano's charges against the Vatican have been debunked.....

I’ve debated on Soujourners on facebook...They hate bringing up abortion..Another left-wing group to check out is The New Prolife Movement..They hate right-wing prolifers..I know..I’ve had a few words with them too. They care more about not talking about abortion then trying to end it..

What is it about us right wing prolifers that set liberals teeth on edge...I love debating them and driving them crazy...

The horror, the horror. Wine, food, golf, Latin? How dare they?

I’m not catholic but this problem with the left wing leading Christian thought seems to be with all of Christianity.

I believe that’s called the First Amendment.

The First Amendment is controversial. Democrats and Republicans agree that listening to, and reading, and speaking and writing Democrat opinions is protected by the First Amendment.

Democrats do not agree that listening to, and reading, and speaking and writing Republican opinions is protected by the First Amendment. Democrats consider it a scandal and an impeachable offense if a Republican replies in kind when Democrats attack.

A true liberal low life then? Apparently the founder of Sojourners was a spiritual adviser to Obama. That is almost all one needs to know.

I know what you mean but find a good parish, good priest and go no matter how annoying the hierarchy is (and they are). We are there to worship Jesus as Joan of Arc did, as the Crusaders did, as Fr Emil Kapaun (MoH winner) did. Let nothing stand in your way, they didn’t. Your battle is exactly the same as theirs, be as brave as they were.

Oh good, I wondered if anyone else heard of them. So they really do, as Compollo does for evangelical Christianity, refuse to acknowledge the evil of abortion? The dangerous thing about Tony Compollo is he was a pretty mainstream source of evangelical bible studies not too long ago. Didn’t realize until fairly recently that he puts his social agenda before scripture.

I take it their reach is larger than their 35,000 subscriber base?

I am no Catholic but I wouldn’t jump to the conclusion the Knights of Columbus are “right” wing. I just see them as a non-political God fearing charity group. But to the deceivers on the left being a rational centrist makes you a rapid barking right winger.
