Rent control gains momentum after Chicago voters again give it thumbs up

Debra Miller considers herself and her husband Jimi lucky.

“We were only homeless 19 months,” she said Friday, recounting how she and her husband were evicted in 2010 when she became ill, lost her job and was unable to cover the cost of rent.

Almost a decade later, rents have only gotten more expensive in Chicago.

Miller is a member of the Lift the Ban Coalition — a group of community organizations whose fight to repeal Illinois’ two-decade ban on rent control is gaining momentum. She joined dozens of protesters Friday who demonstrated outside the downtown office of the Chicago Association of Realtors, which has opposed any effort at allowing rent control.

The protesters held banners saying “Lift the ban” and “Rent Control Now.” Two men dressed in suits and ties — one labeled “realtor,” the other labeled “politician” — threw fake money at each other.

(Debra Miller stands with a coalition of organizers rallying in support of lifting the ban on rent control.)(snip)

The 1997 Rent Control Preemption Act prohibits local governments from regulating the rise of commercial rents. (snip)

A more comprehensive rent control bill was brought forward by state Rep. Mary Flowers, a Democrat whose district includes part of Englewood. That legislation would create six rent control boards across the state and give tax incentives to landlords for improving properties.(snip)

In addition, voters in 18 precincts in four Northwest Side wards on Tuesday overwhelmingly backed a non-binding, advisory referendum asking if the state should “lift the ban on rent control to address rising rents, unjust evictions and gentrification in our community.”

Between 63 and 79 percent of voters voted “yes” in each of those precincts.

Better start lobbying for cup control to stop Big Coffee from unfairly raising the prices to exploit the little guy.

Rent control is the biggest impediment to people buying homes in certain areas; there is little chance of a home either appreciating or even holding its value.

While this country seems hell-bent on scattering its “needy” across the land with low-income housing requirements on new constructions combined with the Section 8 program (since the urban concentrations of “the needy” simply leaves broken, bankrupt cities), it provides little incentive to build or invest in a home. Unless your area is composed of recent detached single-family homes with no buildable land around, there is a good chance you’ll receive your local allotment of outstretched palms to lower your standard of living.

America’s free-shit army

Yes and it's on the march.
Coming next: public floggings of landlords who fail to maintain rent controlled properties.

New York City had rent control for many decades, so I’d have to presume that it had passed muster in the courts.

Yep. They are building a bunch of Condos a few miles from my house, mandated for a certain number of Section 8 housing in it.

Why would I buy a condo where there is section 8 housing nearby? While there are Section 8 tenants who are probably okay, I can imagine there are a lot who aren’t.

I have a family in my suburban neighborhood across the street where I believe the mother takes in foster children. I respect her for that, and she seems like a hard working woman, often up and out before me, and I am out before 5:45 AM. And some of the young boys she has living there have turned out well.

But some haven’t.

There has been drug dealing, physical confrontations, squad cars, etc.

I came home early one day to find seven police vehicles parked in front of my house) with detectives in the street and one of the boys holed up inside the house refusing to come out...someone called the cops because the kid had been seen running through fenced backyards including mine, but...the kid didn’t realize running in the snow left tracks for the police to follow, right to his back door) and another time I heard loud sounds of a scuffle and could see one in progress, followed by six or seven older teenage boys running out, jumping into two cars and taking off with the front door hanging open. It looked like a hit, so I called the cops.)

On one occasion, the poor elderly woman living next to them went into her bathroom one day, saw the window open, and when she closed it, got the feeling someone was there and opened the shower curtain to find one of the kids standing in her bathtub. Probably looking in the medicine cabinets for drugs.

Point is, why would anyone who can afford not to move into units that have section 8 housing? It seems like there is a recurring pattern (at this link, just one opinion on it: https://www.city-journal.org/html/let%E2%80%99s-end-housing-vouchers-12152.html) where section 8 tenants come in, and people begin moving out.

Rent control in a tight rental market just means more rental housing will not be built, creating a downward spiral. This will not end well.

When the government controls anything, it gets worse.

Rent controls will end up meaning fewer rentals, not cheaper rentals.

Same thing happened in Hawaii when they placed price controls on gasoline years ago.

Instead of cheaper gas, they got less gasoline.

If she wouldn’t waste $$$ on Starbucks, she could afford her rent.

Had a very bad experience where a real estate speculator bought ONE house on my block and turned it into Section 8 housing. All the others are owner-occupied single family dwellings.

They got some tenants in there who were a bit Hillbilly-ish but not bad. However, they had a daughter who was around 20 who thought she was really hot stuff.

The daughter would go slutting around at night. Would sleep with a guy for awhile, then dump him and pick-up a new one. So she had this string of spurned white trash lovers all over the place.

After bar closing time they’d come to the house, beating on the door and shouting, looking for a confrontation with whatever guy she was sleeping with now. And they’d get it. Loud fistfights in the street at 2:30, 3 o’ clock in the morning. This went on at least a couple of nights a week for months.

The entire neighborhood wanted to KILL these people. They are lucky this was Pittsburgh and not Detroit, cause up there the place would just mysteriously burn to the ground one day and nobody knew NUTHIN.

The cops started paying them extra special attention, and eventually Slutorella moved out. Has been quiet and peaceful since.

LOL, “Slutorella” with a bunch of un-neutered male dogs sniffing around the front door all day and night.

Granted, those things can happen in any neighborhood, but...they don’t. I wonder why?

These people are tone-deaf in addition to being phonies.

People claiming they can't afford rent with a Starbucks cup ("venti" size too) - poor optics for sure!

Who is going to spend 360 monthly mortgage payments on what is usually the biggest investment of their lifetimes if people with no stake in the area can turn it upside down, and ruin any value you may build? Never mind the people fleeing; how do you get anyone new?

Exactly.

People don’t.

But Leftists don’t understand that, they think people will sacrifice and gamble the value of the biggest investment they are likely to make in their lives and do it for “diversity” or “fairness” or any other emotional thing apart from their own self interest, which is what people SHOULD sacrifice and gamble on...what is best for THEM, not some damned quota goal set by some fairness panel somewhere.

I swear, Leftism is a mental illness. They really do expect you to sacrifice for the best interests of others. Talk about stomping all over your freedom...with smug glee.

I think they know nobody’s going along with this; “white flight” is hardly new, and attempts to reverse/prevent it fail miserably.

While the MGTOW (Men Going Their Own Way) movement has had a noticeable effect on the breeding situation for white females, the next impact to be felt is the lack of young white homebuyers. While mocked for living in their parents’ basements, they are “starving the beast” by doing so. In response, the government simply imports foreigners to live alongside our black underclass.
