The Atlantic ^ | Dec. 9, 2015 | Conor Gearin

Posted on 03/02/2019 12:29:49 PM PST by Albion Wilde

Here’s an alarming but little-known figure—stray cats and pet cats allowed outdoors kill 3.6 million birds every day on average in the United States, for a total of at least 1.3 billion birds per year. That’s most likely a sizable chunk out of the U.S. land-bird population, which the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center estimates is around 10-20 billion....[snip]

But some cat lovers are also bird lovers. Two of them, a birdwatcher named Nancy Brennan and a bird biologist named Susan Willson, have developed what they believe is a solution...

We once put a bell on our cat’s collar. He learned to move without the bell ringing. Our current cat is an indoor cat - too many coyotes around here.

I do wonder whether the collar will attract wild animals at night. We do leave cats out all night, and they have all been facile at dodging predators.

I wish my boy would kill the bird before he brought them inside. By the time he is done there are feathers all around the house.

I believe it. Outdoor cats are a scourge to our migratory birds. One of the biggest reasons people don’t see birds like eastern bluebirds in their neighborhoods.

It’s true. Outdoor cats are awful for native wildlife.

From histoplasmosis to West Nile - over 60 diseases that are carried by birds. A bird killing cat may just save your life.

On the other hand, jays and mockingbirds love to harass cats for entertainment. And hawks and owls are predators.

These people are looney. Do they have any idea why there is a cycle of life and how one predator keeps another species from running rampant causing all sorts of other problems?

I would invite these fools to hang around a farm barn without cats and see the destruction birds can do.

These are the same idiots that think you shouldn’t control the animal population by regulating hunting but they have no problem killing babies.

Cat kills bird= murder
Mom kills baby= choice to be guarded at any cost

Sick sick sick people, insane really.

The squirrel population is seriously out of control.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

If you’re not squeamish about doing something besides trying to hit them with cars, may I suggest the “Squirrelinator” .... got one of these last year. NO squirrels on the bird feeders this year. We do ‘catch’, but not ‘release’ - you may choose to release (if it’s legal where you are), but if you do release, the squirrels should be taken at least 5 miles away & 10 is better.

https://squirrelinator.com/

Note: for gray squirrels, you will rarely catch more than one in the Squirrelinator at a time since they are highly territorial. We did catch 2 once ... a small, young squirrel was in the trap & a large, mature squirrel went in after. Not a good scene, but I was keeping an eye on things so the fighting didn’t last long.

my dog stalks the birdfeeders, and birds nests. She just waits till one falls, and then it’s snack time. It never occurred to me to correct her behavior....it’s Darwin at work.
we also had a cat that killed squirrels, removed the heads and brought me the bodies. He put them in my running shoes on the back deck.

Isn’t that a tad too much sodium for our feline friends? Not to mention too much for THEIR kind friends, the humans who care for them? Do not buy that stuff - take a look at nutritional info!! Get fresh, low sodium chicken, whenever it is on sale, and cook it for you and your babies. If the sodium content is not listed on the package, DO NOT BUY. Everyone will be healthier.
