Dr Seuss did cartoons during WW2 for the New York newspaper PM. They encouraged support for the war and often had what would be considered racist depictions. The Christian Sci Monitor describes a book on this, Dr Seuss goes to War, as "a salutary reminder of an era in which patriotism and liberalism went hand in hand". "America-First"-ers were criticized.

“New York newspaper PM.” Ah, awakened memories. As a youngster, junior high school age, I used to buy PM on a newsstand just to read the comic strip “Barnaby.”
