(CNN)A school bus driver was arrested after she overdosed while driving and crashed into a tree, Newark police said.

The driver, Lisa Byrd, was transporting a dozen students from 14th Avenue School in Newark when the vehicle crashed into a tree on Wednesday, officials said in a statement.

When first responders arrived, police said they revived the 57-year-old woman with Narcan -- a drug that instantly reverses the effects of overdose from heroin and other opioids.

The students, ages 5 to 13, were not injured, police said.

Byrd, who was taken to a local hospital, is facing 12 charges of endangering the welfare of a child, driving while impaired and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

It was not immediately clear whether Byrd has an attorney.

"Endangering the lives of Newark children is something we will not tolerate," said Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka in a statement. "We are grateful that none of the students were injured and that no other residents were harmed due to this incident."

The company employing the driver, F&A Transport, has been "removed from transporting children" until an investigation is completed, Newark Public Schools said in a statement.

Heroin used to be a black thing back in the 70’s. For a while, the current opioid epidemic has been a white thing. It looks like it is now spreading to blacks. White addicts have tended to mostly die quietly. Whereas the black-dominated heroin rush of the 70’s fed rampant crime. I think we may be about to see a brand new crime wave, right in the teeth of the recently-passed druglord amnesty and loosened drug sentencing laws.

No, it wasn’t a black thing. But it WAS more of an urban thing. And a celebrity thing. I grew up in the suburbs in the 70’s and heroin wasn’t even something anyone even contemplated.

It wasn’t *only* a black thing. But it was primarily a black thing, before the crack epidemic began in the 80’s. For opioids, it’s primarily been a white thing for a couple of decades now, with Rush Limbaugh probably the most famous white celebrity hooked on the drug class, until he kicked the habit.

What’s the problem? Just a reflection of the rich, vibrant tapestry of diverse backgrounds and perspectives!

Funny, I don’t believe you.

Wise guy. I doubt there are too many people in TX with the made-up name of Baraka. Newark, NJ’s current mayor, quoted in the article, is the son of the late black doggerel writer, that some have called a poet, Amiri Baraka. If Amiri had been born a little later, he’d probably have become a yap artist/performer.

Small town.

I grew up in a bedroom community that wasn't listed as a separate entity on maps, but was added after a hyphen.

And we lived on a street that was numbered in the 90s.

Newark, TX has a 14th Ave, so I'm guessing there's one less due to fear of a backlash from triskaidekaphobians.

/s (about not NJ)

I should be more compassionate, but I would be tempted to attend to every single traumatized and injured child in detail before I bothered with the druggie bus driver who crashed a school bus. I’m good at forgiveness, but it might take me more time than this selfish and evil person would have.
