A few weeks ago I was listening to one of the national baseball writers being interviewed on the Angels station... I’m not certain who it was but it might have been Jeff Passan who covers MLB for Yahoo Sports... Anyway, he was asked who will be the surprise team for 2019 and he said that it is the Padres. He compared what the Padres have been doing to what Houston did when they went from dead last to being a WS contender. The last piece of the Padres puzzle was going to be adding veterans to their roster. If that writer knows what he is talking about this could be an exciting year in the NL West.
It's essentially the equivalent of AAA in baseball. There was a lot of talent out there, but an awful lot of dropped balls, poorly run routes, and failure to click inside the 20. Maybe they'll get better as they play more together, but there were just too many field goals for the general public.
Will it survive? Probably for a couple seasons, especially if some of the AAF end up in the NFL next fall. If not, it will fall into the category of USeless as the USFL, as Wobbly as the WFL and as Xcruciatingly bad as the XFL, and be a trivia question by 2021.
yep and trips to the mound even before the pitcher is pulled.
I think i saw a playoff college football ,game, commercials after the TD and BEFORE the extra point. Maybe the final championship. Then more commercials of course after then extra point.
Im have seen commercials mow AFTER the kickoff before the next play. The there is the constant replay for referee’s calls. College games have gone from 3 hours to almost 4.
I seriously doubt these guys are getting much in the way of coaching. They went for big names in many cases, guys who I think are probably mailing it in for a check(Steve Spurrier, Mike Martz) or in over their head and just trying to build a resume for some future NFL gig (Mike Vick). Spurrier is walking around like he needs a new hip (that's not a joke, he's pretty hobbled by something) and I doubt he's out on the practice field working with these guys through the day. And there's no film to study so it's easy money.
But who cares, the players are trying hard and sometimes something cool happens. I haven't watched a full game because I don't care that much, I've just watched a couple of halfs and was entertained by some big plays and some big hits.
I have 4 football tams. I may tape 3-4 games on a saturday. I can watch a game in 45-50 minutes fast forward. I have learned how not to watch the second game and inadvertent see the final score off the first game and so on.
So I can watch all 4 in less time than it takes to watch 1 if I do it in real time.
I know Spurrier had knee-replacement surgery about 5 years ago. But yeah, I think the limp has to be from something else.
Devil's advocate: if you predict the Padres are going to surprise people and they do, you look like a genius. If they don't, nobody really blames you.
Personally I hope the Padres do well because I love San Diego, it's my "if only my wife would let me move out of NJ" preferred city. Time will tell. I can say this, after the Padres scooped up Machado the Phillies better make something happen with Harper or they will look like incompetent fools. They have all the money in the world and bragged about spending stupid money to get stars, if they get outbid on TWO of them then the GM will take some serious heat from fans.
what is wrong with the world in a nutshell...
This new league offers guys like that hope, I expect they'll play with full intensity. Yeah they're not as good, yeah the placalling is terrible. But hey, it's football.
Theyre settling into mediocrity right now. Theyve pretty much written off 2019.
I hate that they are tearing down a perfectly good stadium.
Trout is on boxes of Superpretzels. I like them so I usually have his face in my freezer.
Well this was a serious baseball analyst rather than a guy throwing out stuff...it was the only unusual prediction that he made.. one reason that it impressed me... Roger Lodge has a rotation of good analysts that he talks to and this was one of them. He spent time explaining what the Padres have been doing without attracting attention and how much it resembles what Houston had done. Barring injuries we should see it play out this season. A good underdog story is always fun.
If Bush hadnt insisted that indoor baseball isnt baseball, they wouldnt be. Im done sitting in that 100+ heat, but it sounds like theyre already screwing up with AstroTurf.
Almost every full-time player has endorsement deals, from more than $3 million down to a few hundred thousand. Most also have local endorsements that miss being officially counted.
Average salary is $4+ million, with full time players probably at $10 million. Minimum is over $500k.
Yes, there shouldn’t be any clock in baseball. Get rid of the review rule and fire the bad umpires. Another thing, the umpires ARE NOT the stars.
Meanwhile, the Rays will use the best analytics talent in MLB to deliver 90+ wins without any big names and the lowest payroll in baseball. As a reward for their efforts, the Rays will also have the lowest attendance in baseball.
Yes, it could be exciting. I don't think the Dodgers helped themselves a whole lot in the off season. Kershaw was not as dominating last year & I think he is beginning the downward slope of his career. Remains to be seen how Seager comes back. I thought they should have moved him to 2b & signed Machado. Or Turner to 2b & put Machado at 3b.
But what do I know?
