Kudus to the author, Madeline Farber. I would have read another article on CWD, but deadly zombie deer disease, that expands the audience by 100 times, maybe 1000. Deadly Zombie Deer Disease, there's a money making video game there.

It is similar to mad cow disease.

It seems that some entrepreneur could offer to test venison for presence of the prions before anyone consumes it.

If hunters shot affected deer, but left them in the field, I wonder if any predators, like coyotes, would also become infected and act as vectors to spread it even further. That would wreak havoc on the ecology of the whole area.

CWD LINK FOUND IN DIRT

A mineral found in certain types of clays aids deer CWD. Chronic Wasting Disease known as CWD has been found to spread faster when bottom grazers such as sheep and deer feed off of pastures containing the mineral known as montmonillonite which is found in clays. The discovery was made in UW Madison and reported in such scientific journals as the UK’s New Scientist CWD IFO

CWD has been in PA for at least a decade now first showing up in captive
deer that were brought in from out of state, I believe. I don't worry about it
too much as I butcher my own venison. Don't harvest visibly sick deer,
don't eat the internal organs and de-bone all of the meat and you'll be OK.
