In the US, the average American teacher makes a starting salary of $44,000 a year, and about $68,000 for a veteran teacher.
Meanwhile, according to data released by the OECD, the starting salary for a high school teacher with no experience in Luxembourg is about $79,000. The peak salary for a veteran teacher is $137,000.
The OECD's full data set reveals a yawning gap between the highest and lowest paid teachers around the world. When converted to US dollars, many of the salaries fall well short of the average American teacher, who makes $44,000 starting out and approximately $68,000 at the upper end.

Besides a population less than Denver and less than 1/4 that of the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield metropolitan statistical area, what might be different about Luxembourg?
You need to factor in the cost of living in each country.
Can we have that in after-tax take-home dollars?

With numerous days off during those 9 months.
None of those compare unless you adjust them for pensions and other benefits, including time off and time to full vesting on stuff.

It is amazing how much extra money a country has to spend on things when another country protects you from Russia.
Good point that often gets overlooked in teacher pay discussions. Teachers only work about 180 days a year, but get paid all year long. Average full time worker in America works 240 days a year.
In Texas teachers also have private retirement system and do not have to pay into social security which means they take home an additional 7.5%.
I pay 7 percent of my salary into that retirement, which the legislature regularly makes worse. It’s misleading.
Comparing average teachers in one country to the highest paid in another country is meaningless.
In my district here in Pennsylvania (Council Rock), the average teacher was paid $96,116 per year (2017), not including benefits, and not including the fact that they barely work nine months out of the year. The max salary is capped at $110,743, and a very large proportion of the teachers make that salary.
One huge issue in pay disparity within our very large country is that legislation controls bargaining power. In Pennsylvania, cities reserve the right to themselves to union bust, while the suburbs are stuck with legislation like Act 88. Philadelphia teachers salaries, a mere ten miles away, average 60,763 a year, and teachers across the river in New Jersey average $67,812, about 66% of the salary where I live.
Well, to bring discipline into the equation, changes things.
I know somebody, who told me, one of their relatives was a teacher. She went from a big city district, where they had major discipline problems, to a small town.
And she took a big pay cut to go teach in the small town. However, the discipline and other ancillary headaches of teaching were much less for her in the small town. And the lower cost of living helped compensate for the smaller paycheck.
