Its impossible to say what everyone should do. Everyone has to look at their own situation. Just ask yourself, how could I survive, if we were living in the 1800s?
Ill bet you can think of lots of ways to do stuff without modern conveniences. Dont expect to get there overnight, but do approach the issue with a determined stride, and not a stroll along the beach.
Hope thats some food for thought.

Thanks for all that info, greeneyes. I’ve been wondering about our financial picture for quite some time. It is bleak, to be sure, but your post made me think of some additional steps we could take. Appreciate your insight.
I saw trouble on the horizon years ago and started buying gold when it was still under $300 an oz. We now have about two years worth of income in gold and silver coins and another two years worth of income in stocks etc in my IRA plus some land of about the same value. Zero debt.
I decided the safest bet would be to be mobile so we could get away from the mobs when trouble starts. I bought a boat. Fully equipped cruising sailboats, used, are cheaper than you think. Our boat is equipped with a reverse osmosis seawater desalinator and stocked with at least a year of provisions. We sailed away from the island with a million people on it in 2007 and now have years of blue water sailing experience under our belts using old school navigation techniques cross checking with GPS.
Currently, we are holed up for the winter on an island in SE Alaska (And loving it!). We have a lot going on, but we think we have found the ultimate SHTF solution for us.
You are welcome. Glad to be of help.
