For women in particular, domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness. And the top causes of homelessness among families are: (1) lack of affordable housing, (2) unemployment, (3) poverty, and (4) low wages, in that order. And guess what states have the highest homeless? Hawaii and New York, have a higher per capita homeless rate than California's. Finally, records show California, indeed, has the highest total homeless population at over 150,000, far more than second place New York. Will the invading caravans from south of the border help relieve the homeless situation especially in California? And don't forget Los Angeles has declared it's now a sanctuary city.
and not a damn one said DISCIPLINE. Know you ARE God’s will and act accordingly.
I lived in Santa Barbara, California for many years.
Back then, MANY homeless encamped downtown.
You hit the nail on the head; the vast majority of them had mental problems.
Drug use and alcoholism were major factors, too.
Mental illness & drugs & alcohol. Plus high taxes making it hard to save money for a rainy day.
Unemployment will do that although I personally found banks to be more than kind (just my experience!) and patient. Luckily, I rebounded but it was a scary time.
One third were drug and alcohol abusers.
One third were mentally ill. Often they had been treated, but once released they dont take the medicine prescribed for them.
One third were criminals.
There was overlap among the groups, especially substance abusers and the mentally ill.
Your survey is similar to my own experience after 25 years responding to calls with the homeless people who live in camps or along trails, etc. I would point out however that there is another group of people who actually have jobs and live in cars, vans and even motorhomes who either cannot afford normal housing or are trying to pay off debt, etc... Some of them are very frugal and principled and refuse to take handouts. I would not be at all surprised if some people posting here have been in this situation. You do not find them at shelters. These people will often hide their living arrangements from others. They keep their belongings in storage units and do not plan on staying homeless forever.
Mental Illness.
We didn't have a homeless problem until the ACLU won a lawsuit that forced the closure of many mental institutions. The closure simply dumped the mental patients onto the sidewalks, and here they are.
Arent 2,3,& 4 variations on a theme?
(2) unemployment, (3) poverty, and (4) low wages,
I AGREE WITH THE MAJORITY HERE. DRUGS THEN MENTAL ILLNESS
Liberalism.
Bellevue in NYC is the perfect example.
When they closed the mental ward, they reopened the facility as a homeless shelter. Leave at 8am and come back for dinner.
I had occasion to need to be in the waiting room at Bellevue to see a specialist for my son at NYU Med Center, and the homeless litter the waiting room. I took a comb out to straighten said son’s hair and a homeless guy came up and asked if he could use the comb. Freaked us out!
At one time, Rudy had eliminated a lot of the problem. Now, it’s a freak show.
Main cause of homelessness is Marxist Liberals!!
1). Drug and alcohol addiction
2). Mental illness/brain damage (often caused by above $
bBoy you hit a nerve with that one. I was never technically homeless, I had a home I couldn’t afford but I did have a home. I had a job, a good job that paid quite well. What I also had was a former wife who decided that she could do better alone and the courts decided that since that’s what she wanted, I needed to pay for it.
She had a boyfriend, bought him a sailboat. In the meantime I collected cans to return for nickles so I could put gas in the car so I could get to work.
But really , I’m not bitter! And I’m not homeless.
In re rape at shelters I obviously a hundred percent oppose.
But I think most of them avoid the shelters cause they cant be high/holding there. Not because they might get raped.
According to the media, it's Republicans in the White House.
Homelessness practically disappears when we have Democrat presidents.

More like environmental radicals. Some of whom are very wealthy and buy a lot of influence in California’s Democratic party.
Michael Crichton wrote a novel or two featuring that scenario. And he created his villains based on the actual writings of real world enviro radicals.
They are about as subtle as the author of Mein Kampf, but few people are aware of the evil that these lunatics are advocating.
“Decades of Democrat Partys agenda”
FDR’s - the tax on first 1400 dollars..never an increase
Soc Sec only on the first etc etc
LBJ’s Great society freebies for all blacks -LBJ said we’ll have’em voting dem for the next 100 years ..
DEMS = Liars
Dems = Voters bought and paid 4 -WITH everyone elses money !
It’s worth noting that if domestic violence correlates to homelessness, NY/CA/HI are therefore quite likely to have the highest rates of both.
Glad that you are not bitter or homeless... but it sounds like a raw deal perpetrated by the typical abuse of our legal system by lawyers. Maybe lawyers should accept some of the blame for the homelessness situation? I have known more than a few guys who had good jobs, but were living in their cars, vans, boats, travel trailers or motorhomes for extended periods of time because they didn't want to bother their friends or relatives. Many times this was because of situations similar to yours. Some of those shelters could be considered homes, but some of them could not, so they were technically homeless.
Can you identify them please?
Drugs and alcohol, unwillingness to sober up, getting money from the City, lawlessness AT City Hall which allows them to live and poop on the streets without consequences, sentimentalism instead of good, thoughtful solutions. Mental hospitals needed.
