I have just reprogrammed a laptop for a friend. When I did, of course Windows 10 was reinstalled on it, and of course Windows Defender was also reinstalled as well.
With all the news coming out lately about Windows Defender interfering with Windows Updates, and of course most of us know just how reliable (I'm trying really hard not to throw up on my keyboard right now) Windows Defender is, I'm trying to find a newer, better, SIMPLER Internet Security program.
I've used AVG myself for many years but it's getting to the point where I hate to use it now, especially now that they no longer support their older software which I found easier to work with than their newer stuff.
I tried the newer version of Norton Security and found it to be too intrusive and I hate it when the program does background tasks that I didn't tell it to do. I like to be able to control my software.
So I'm on the hunt for a simpler, easier to use, Internet Security program, something along the lines of the older AVG, 2017 version and older. It doesn't need to run a dozen different modules, and it needs to have a simple interface.
I'm going to post this and get online and start searching (again) but I wanted to put this out there and see if fellow Freepers can lend a hand.
Thanks.
I'm not a typical user, obviously. :-)
Sounds list-ping-worthy....

Thanks to ShadowAce for the ping!
Windows Defender
“run windows 10 in a virtual machine”
No more calls please, we have a winner.
I’ve tried a bunch of different programs but always found my way back to Zonealarm. It’s free, installs easily, and seems to work (virus free for 10+ years).
Note Bit Defender and the low number of false positives which can actually be more troublesome than a real virus.
I'm using Eset, a payfor, right now. When it expires, I'm switching to Bit Defender.
Bump to the bad news re: CNET. Yes they are horrible and SHOULD NOT be used for downloads. Instead, go directly to the manufacturer’s website and download from there.

I’m on a 14 day trial for WebRoot right now, but I saw a lot of chatter about Bit Defender. I’m curious about how well that runs and if the interface is easy to utilize and run. My biggest complaint against many of the internet security programs is that they’re making the programs more complicated and thereby harder to understand and utilize.
use cookie wall for that- you can choose which cookies and sites to save-
Sigh.............
Now what will I do?
Follow this link. Then click on "Download 30-day free trial."
Perhaps I’ll try that on my Windows 7 install and leave the Webroot on my Windows 10 install for now. Thanks.
I'll give it 30 days and see how it does. So far though, I like the interface and I want to try out it's VPN service too. Thanks again for the suggestion.
I’ve always liked Revo Uninstaller for removing software. Especially software like anti-virus because it’s so complicated.
My experience has been that most software products’ uninstall software does a piss poor job of removing themselves from the Registery. Revo (free) cleans up that mess.
Glad you like Bit Defender. My subscription to Eset has about a month to go. I may jump the gun and uninstall Eset and install Bit Defender before Eset expires.
