I tend to use Windows Defender, despite its shortcomings, because it's mostly unobtrusive with regard to my work activities (compiling drivers and system-level executables drives a lot of AV products nuts), and for the little amount of internet activity I do on Windows, it's enough coverage.
I'm not a typical user, obviously. :-)
Sounds list-ping-worthy....

I’ve tried a bunch of different programs but always found my way back to Zonealarm. It’s free, installs easily, and seems to work (virus free for 10+ years).

BUMP to the link in reply #3.
Here's a more definitive review of anti-virus applications from that same website.
Note Bit Defender and the low number of false positives which can actually be more troublesome than a real virus.
I'm using Eset, a payfor, right now. When it expires, I'm switching to Bit Defender.

Bump to the bad news re: CNET. Yes they are horrible and SHOULD NOT be used for downloads. Instead, go directly to the manufacturer’s website and download from there.

I read the tech blogs I have seen no news coming out lately about Windows Defender interfering with Windows Updates. Read:
On FR.
From The Register.

I’m on a 14 day trial for WebRoot right now, but I saw a lot of chatter about Bit Defender. I’m curious about how well that runs and if the interface is easy to utilize and run. My biggest complaint against many of the internet security programs is that they’re making the programs more complicated and thereby harder to understand and utilize.

When your WebRoot trial expires, you could try Bit Defender.
Follow this link. Then click on "Download 30-day free trial."

Perhaps I’ll try that on my Windows 7 install and leave the Webroot on my Windows 10 install for now. Thanks.

I went ahead and removed Webroot and installed BitDefender instead. Glad I did. It didn't long to uninstall Webroot (maybe 5-10 seconds???) which raises doubt to its effectiveness.
I'll give it 30 days and see how it does. So far though, I like the interface and I want to try out it's VPN service too. Thanks again for the suggestion.

I’ve always liked Revo Uninstaller for removing software. Especially software like anti-virus because it’s so complicated.
My experience has been that most software products’ uninstall software does a piss poor job of removing themselves from the Registery. Revo (free) cleans up that mess.
Glad you like Bit Defender. My subscription to Eset has about a month to go. I may jump the gun and uninstall Eset and install Bit Defender before Eset expires.
