On Wednesday afternoon around 3:45 p.m., officials with the Tuckahoe Police Department received a call about a barking dog on the loose on Fairview Avenue.

When they eventually managed to return Sadie to her home, officers noticed the sliding door in the backyard was open. Then, after walking the perimeter of the house, they “smelled an odor of gas coming from an open basement window,” the police department wrote on Facebook.

Though it first appeared that “Sadie was being a bad girl,” the police department said, officials with the Eastchester Fire Department and Con Edison later determined there was a gas leak coming from the basement. ..."

"The dog saved the house from a potential gas explosion and gas leak," police Lieutenant Lawrence Rotta told WABC.

"She is a hero," Sadie’s owner Serena Costello told the news station, adding she saved both her life and the life of her 4-year-old daughter.

Costello also said she was initially written a summons for having an unleashed dog in the area, but one of the officers on the scene “ripped it up” after the gas leak was discovered.

Geez Louise.. The dog was home alone.. She was trying to save her own life. Still a good dog!

According to the reports, the dog was desperately trying to get people's attention.

“At first police thought she was a dog on the loose, but then realized the pit bull was on a mission to get help.

On Wednesday around 3:30 p.m. Sadie – a 60-pound pit bull – was found wandering the streets of Tuckahoe barking up a storm.”

Police tried to catch her but Sadie bolted back to her home on Fairview Avenue with cops in hot pursuit. When they got there they said they noticed the sliding door in the backyard was open.

“When they went to investigate they noticed an odor of gas emanating from the doorway,” Rotta told CBS2’s Scott Rapoport.

It turns out there was an actual gas leak in the home. Police believe Sadie ran from the house to get away from it and then led officers back to help.

If she had _led_ the police back to the house I would say yes, she was trying to save her family. Shes still a hero in my book.

Pit bulls usually get heat/hate for bad behavior so I guess it’s good to reminds us there is some good ones around.

Pit bulls are sweet and loyal dogs. Every breed has its bad apples.

Sadie proved she’s man’s best friend, indeed.
