Genny at the Glen: Rochester brewery inks sponsorship with racetrack
For the first time in 40 years, Upstate New York’s Genesee will be the official beer of auto racing at Watkins Glen International racetrack.
The multi-year sponsorship announced today unites two of Upstate New York’s iconic names. It means Genesee will be a major sponsor for the upcoming racing season at Watkins Glen, which runs from April to September. It will also help underwrite a free concert series at the track this year.
The Genesee Beer logo will appear throughout the racetrack, including on the pace car used for the races and on a giant “beer” tank — actually a water tank on the track grounds that holds 2.5 million ounces. And, of course, Genesee Beer will be available throughout the track. There will be many other opportunities for cross-promotions of the beer and the track, including what are billed as “hundreds of fan experiences.”
Genesee’s deal with Watkins Glen International is the brewery’s first major sponsorship of any kind in more than 10 years. It comes less than a year after the brewery on St. Paul Street, New York state’s oldest, unveiled a $48 million renovation and modernization project.
Full starting lineup for Gander RV Duel races at Daytona

Sunday’s Daytona 500 single-car qualifying set only the front row for the “Great American Race” — Hendrick Motorsports teammates William Byron (Busch Pole Award) and Alex Bowman will lead the field when the green flag drops Feb. 17 (2:30 p.m. ET, FOX, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
The qualifying speeds, though, set the lineups for Thursday’s Gander RV Duel races at Daytona (7 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio), the twin 60-lap races that determine the full starting lineup for the 61st running of the Daytona 500.
Duel 1 is typically comprised from the odd-numbered drivers on the Daytona 500 qualifying speed chart — first, third, fifth, etc. Duel 2 is then the even-finishing drivers. NASCAR officials, though, ensure an even number of Open, non-Charter teams in each duel race.
The results of those two races will determine the cars that qualify for the Daytona 500, and where they line up on the grid. The winner of Duel 1 will start the Daytona 500 in third place, second place starts fifth, and so on through the inside row. The winner of Duel 2 will start the Daytona 500 in fourth place, second place starts sixth and so on through the outside row.
Additionally, Tyler Reddick and Casey Mears locked themselves into the Daytona 500 field by virtue of being the fastest two Open cars during qualifying.

Growing up Genesee Beer was as the bottom of our list of beers but it was cheap. That and Utica Club.
So with 42 cars competing in the two qualifying races, is everyone in? We used to see a 43-car field at Daytona.
