PERKASIE — A 13-month old girl who was seriously injured when the family dog attacked the child and her mother remains hospitalized but is showing improvement, the Perkasie Borough Police Department said the afternoon of Feb. 1.

“We did get word this afternoon that the baby victim is responding well to medical treatment, which is good news,” Perkasie police Chief Steven Hillias said.

Officers responding to the 400 block of Grandview Avenue in Perkasie about 6:30 p.m. Jan. 30 found the child with serious bite wounds on multiple areas of her body and her mother with bite marks on her hands, arms and legs, police said.

The child was taken to a local hospital, then transferred to a Philadelphia hospital, where she underwent surgery and was in critical condition Jan. 31, police said.

A female neighbor heard the screams when the attack happened and responded to help, police said. A male passing motorist, who police called “heroic,” stopped and interrupted the attack, saving the toddler, police said.

“Unfortunately, he himself suffered a serious leg injury after falling on the ice and snow while struggling with the dog. He refused medical care until the injured child was treated,” the Perkasie Borough Police Department said on its crimewatchpa.com page.

Investigation of the incident is continuing, but it appears to be a tragic accident and more information will be posted as developments arise, police said.

“The dog is in confinement,” Hillias said.

“The dog is in confinement,” Hillias said.

The dog’s breed has not been released, but there has been comment on social media, he said.

“I find that curious because what matters most is the baby, the mother, the good Samaritan,” Hillias said.

He said he’s proud of the local community, both for the response of the good Samaritan — “When a person was in need, one of our citizens didn’t think twice” — and the well wishes for the family that have been conveyed through social media.

The family involved and the good Samaritan are not ready to speak publicly and it is asked that their privacy be respected, police said.

No problem with fedex, the dog didn’t like brown shirts. She’s ok in my book, I don’t like brown shirts either...
