Mary Poppins Returns, which picked up four Oscar nominations last week, is an enjoyably derivative film that seeks to inspire our nostalgia for the innocent fantasies of childhood, as well as the jolly holidays that the first Mary Poppins film conjured for many adult viewers.
Part of the new films nostalgia, however, is bound up in a blackface performance tradition that persists throughout the Mary Poppins canon, from P. L. Traverss books to Disneys 1964 adaptation, with disturbing echoes in the studios newest take on the material, Mary Poppins Returns.
One of the more indelible images from the 1964 film is of Mary Poppins blacking up. When the magical nanny (played by Julie Andrews) accompanies her young charges, Michael and Jane Banks, up their chimney, her face gets covered in soot, but instead of wiping it off, she gamely powders her nose and cheeks even blacker. Then she leads the children on a dancing exploration of London rooftops with Dick Van Dykes sooty chimney sweep, Bert.

55 years ago the proglibs were not yet completely nuts.

What's going on here is that professors don't have much that's new or interesting to say about the books they teach. Race, gender, sexual preference give them something to say. That goes for the New York Times as well.
May ALL the white people at the NY Slimes jump off the top of the building for the cause.
These people have descended into pure madness.
This is all so stupid, it’s ridiculous. There’s an AMERICAN tradition of black face players, I don’t think there’s an English or Australian one, unless it relates to Coal Miners. Travers was an Aussie, if anyone doesn’t know that. And my guess is that coal dust isn’t that easy to wash off, I bet you’ve got to really scrub. But these snowflakes today, they don’t do nothing that requires any physical exertion at all. They need to scrub their minds and souls. God help them, I mean it.
Because it wasn't blackface, it was "dirty/sooty face". WTH is wrong with these people??! Blackface?? You've got to be kidding me!
Chim, chimney
Chim, chimney
Chim, chim, cher-ee
A sweep is as lucky
As lucky can be
Chim, chimney
Chim, chimney
Chim, chim, cher-oo
Good luck will rub off when
I shakes hands with you
Or blow me a kiss
And that’s lucky too
Now as the ladder of life
Has been strung
You may think a sweep’s
On the bottommost rung
Though I spends me time
In the ashes and smoke
In this ‘ole wide world
There’s no happier bloke
Chim, chimney
Chim, chimney
Chim, chim, cher-ee
A sweep is as lucky
As lucky can be
Chim, chimney
Chim, chimney
Chim, chim, cher-oo
Good luck will rub off when
I shakes hands with you
Chim, chimney
Chim, chimney
Chim, chim, cher-ee
A sweep is as lucky
As lucky can be
Chim, chimney
Chim, chimney
Chim, chim, cher-oo
Good luck will rub off when
I shakes hands with you
I choose me bristles
With pride, yes, I do
A broom for the shaft
And a brush for the flute
Up where the smoke
Is all billered and curled
‘Tween pavement and stars
Is the chimney sweep world
When there’s hardly no day
Nor hardly no night
There’s things half in shadow
And halfway in light
On the rooftops of London
Coo, what a sight
Chim, chimney
Chim, chimney
Chim, chim, cher-ee
When you’re with a sweep
You’re in glad company
Nowhere is there
A more happier crew
Than them wot sings
“Chim chim cher-ee
Chim cher-oo”
Chim, chimney
Chim, chim, cher-ee
Chim, cher-oo
Because we didn’t have so many nutsy, mediocre academic pretenders looking for their 15 minutes, back then - nor a media culture that would tolerate them even if we did.
Government funds and misuse of endowments.
Yes. And they print it on white paper, to show the proper place of black people.
The filthy, stinking racist scum.
Got to put in the /S. Some people will take this seriously.
“...its been going on since the 19th century.”
This is a bit off topic, but also on topic if you get my drift.
When I was a kid we had a piano we could bang away on, and some old music books. Boy, if I only had them today, so un-PC. We had a version of The Yellow Rose of Texas that included the word “darkie”, etc.
And lots of Irish songs. Well, one day we were banging out The Wearing O’ the Green, and my grandmother (who was a Catholic from Northern Ireland) came in a started reading us the riot act.
We were like: hey, Grandma, it’s right here in this music book you’ve got in your house! But she was adamant. She said: the dirty politicians wrote that song, to divide the people and you are never to play it again.
So, you know, you are right, but it goes well beyond the US Dem Party.
They were damned chimney sweeps.
Chimney sweeps.
Unbelievable. Chimney sweeps had black grit all over their faces because it is what they do. It has absolutely zero to do with “blackface” in a racial sense.
WTF. Are we going to have to edit “October Sky” to remove the black dust on faces?
These people are mentally ill. MENTALLY ILL.
Its real there is a Bizzaro world and we are in it.
October Sky
One of my favorites.
To Leftists, it has to be a racist movie.
Argh. Yea, one of my favorites as well...
The NY Times fired off a whole bunch of editors and writers so they are having to find hacks to fill their papers.
Was Days of Thunder racist for Robert Downey Jr.’s character?
I’m sorry. I meant Tropic Thunder.
I suppose that black lung disease is funny too.
The Left is bat=s=crazy.
You go into a chimney you will get covered in soot.
Just because they grew up seeing reruns of cartoons with “explosions” leaving blackface soot doesn’t mean it is all the same “soot”.
If you have some on you (or your mate does), it’s easier to smudge some on than freak out about a small spot of black powder on your cheek or prim blouse.
