Worried about your privacy after taking an at-home DNA test? Here's what you should know and what you can do.
If you’ve sent a DNA sample such as a tube of spit to 23andMe, Ancestry, MyHeritage, or one of the many other companies that offer direct-to-consumer genetic testing, you’ve sent them the essential information they need to provide you with their analysis of your genetic code.
[SNIP] But if you later decide that you want to remove your genetic information from the web for privacy reasons, can you? And should you?
Genetic data can reveal information about your health, your risk for certain diseases, and your familial relationships—potentially including those previously unknown or undisclosed.
But deleting your genetic data is not always straightforward, according to James Hazel, Ph.D., J.D., a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Genetic Privacy and Identity in Community Settings at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
The degree to which you have control over the genetic information you’ve submitted, and even your physical DNA sample, “varies widely, depending on the company,” says Hazel, who has published research on the privacy policies of genetic testing companies.
“Some companies provide a relatively high level of control over that information,” he says, making deletion of genetic data or destruction of a genetic sample easy. “On the other side of the spectrum you have companies with little to no policy in place, or policies that permit storage of your sample and the data, sometimes indefinitely.”

I don’t know which company your daughter used to test her DNA, but some are more accurate than others. That said, DNA isn’t measured in political/countries. They use a reference population who’s ancestors have dwelt in an area for centuries. These populations are going to overlap countries. If you are German, you will likely get some Scandinavian results. The same with England, Ireland, Scotland, France. The Vikings sacked Rome and controlled areas in Italy. They were everywhere in Europe. 25% would be a maybe a grandparent or a couple of great-grandparents who have DNA consistent with someone in Scandinavia. It doesn’t mean they were born or lived there.
A 1% result of African heritage would most likely be ignored. It’s considered “noise”.
No one will ever successfully remove their information from those sites. Anyone who understands the technical implementations of databases knows that ain’t gunna happen.
Why can’t you provide an “anonymous” sample and payment?
No names would be tied to the sample or recipient. Just an email address and pay stub.
Since you wouldn’t know anyone with a matching/similar genetic history, it wouldn’t compromise privacy.
Wanting to know genetic “markers” (traits) and ancient regions shouldn’t have to open the door.
The police used GedMatch to catch that serial killer in CA. They got a hit on a relative, and then employed the services of a “Forensic Genealogist” to narrow it down to him. I read that GedMatch currently has enough DNA samples to identify about half the people in the country. This gives the police a suspect. All they have to do then is wait for him to discard something with his DNA on it.
So, it’s good to catch serial killers. But it’s the other uses that I worry about. Sperm donation and adoptions are areas that are already experiencing ramifications. Time will tell how this works out. I don’t think it’s going to be good.

Deleting your FB data has never, ever really happened. It might take them a little time, but if they want to know what you posted 10 years ago on your deleted account, they will retrieve it.
