The 13-3 win for the New England Patriots over the Los Angeles Rams last night wasnt the most exciting Super Bowl ever played by any measure, but the 2019 big NFL game was sure one for the history books.
First of all, in the Patriots third consecutive visit to Super Bowl, the match-up in Atlanta on Sunday was the lowest scoring Super Bowl ever, a dubious honor at best. The record was previously held by Super Bowl VII, which saw the Miami Dolphins best the Washington Redskins 14-7 on January 14, 1973.
Secondly, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is now the first NFL player to win six Super Bowl rings with this latest triumph for the Massachusetts team. With this sixth Super Bowl win for the Patriots, the 41-year old Brady also has been in nine Super Bowls over his career, more than any other NFL player ever which is not a record to scoff at in any way.
However, when it comes to ratings, Super Bowl LIII is not one anyones going to want to brag about.
Shown on CBS for the first time since 2016 and with ad spots going for around $5 million each, the Rams loss scored a 44.9/68 in metered market results.
To put that in the starkest light of day, thats a dip of just over 5.2% from the big NFL battle of February 4, 2018 on NBC in the first round of ratings. On a larger playing field, that metered market result for yesterdays game is the worst the Super Bowl has done in the early numbers since the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals on February 1, 2009.
A very tight and seamlessly flowing offering from the network, yesterdays Super Bowl is also down a bit over 8% from the metered markets of the last time CBS had the game three years ago.
Super Bowl 50 saw the Denver Broncos top the Carolina Panthers 24-10 on February 7, 2016 in a gridiron clash that eventually resulted in 111.9 million viewers and the honor at the time of being the third most watched show in U.S. TV history.
The lowest rated Super Bowl in eight years in the early metrics, last years Philadelphia Eagles victory 41-33 over the Patriots ended up with 103.4 million viewers, a nine-year low so far.
Last nights post-game premiere of James Corden-fronted reality series The Worlds Best pulled in a 14.0 in the metered markets according to Nielsen numbers this morning. While unscripted apples to dramatic oranges, thats a drop of almost 14% from the special Super Bowl episode of NBCs This Is Us that aired after last years Eagles win.
No surprise for such a low scoring game that didnt see a single touch down for ages, Super Bowl LIII peaked near the end with a 47.3 in metered markets in the 9:30-10 PM ET slot.
As we now turn our gaze to Super Bowl LIV set for next year in Miami, well update with more Super Bowl LIII numbers, including that tepid Maroon 5 halftime show and The Worlds Best debut later, as more data comes in.
As we have done in the past, lets put the latest Super Bowl in greater perspective by checking out the Top 5 Super Bowl metered market ratings ever a list that this years game is certainly not a part of:
1) 2015: 49.7 Super Bowl XLIX: New England Patriots vs. Seattle Seahawks (NBC) 2) 2016: 49.0 Super Bowl 50: Denver Broncos vs. Carolina Panthers (CBS) 3) 2017: 48.8 Super Bowl LI: New England Patriots vs. Atlanta Falcons (Fox) 4) 2013: 48.1 Super Bowl XLVII: Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49ers (CBS) 5) 2011: 47.9 Super Bowl XLV: Green Bay Packers vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (Fox)
I think there were a few things going on, in no particular order:
Yes, I read that "Kneeling festival" comment too and decided not to watch.
Did they kneel?
Even people in LA don’t care for the Rams.
I was at a party that happened to be showing the Super Bowl, and this is my take...
Gladys Knight did a great job with the National Anthem.
The game itself was boring.
Some of the commercials were actually funny.
Everyone wondered if Adam Levine was going to take off his pants next.
I tuned out after the Rams were moving downfield towards a go ahead score in the 4th only to have a big gain nullified by a bogus holding call on their center. At that point you knew the fix was in. To add to that I heard later that a Rams receiver was interfered with but not called which would’ve given LA a 1st and goal at the one. Of course if you’re a Saints fan it’s all poetic justice. Still, the horrible officiating is ruining these games in critical situations and effecting fan interest.
Oh, was that last night?
I enjoyed the game, have not watched a game in years. But the constant Communist Party Social justice harping was like fingernails on a chalkboard.
Just. Play. The . Game...
Adam Levine is just too old to be parading around with his shirt off like a 20 year old. He looked ridiculous.
In years past Costco, the malls, and even grocery stores all have been fairly empty around here on Superbowl Sunday. But when we were out yesterday that all of the parking lots were packed and the stores we went to were packed as well. We suspected that the ratings for the game were down.
Even our neighbors who have a Superbowl party every year, didn’t bother this year. These spoiled rich NFL players have screwed themselves big time. Could not have happened to a nicer bunch of clowns.
If you really like to watch football it was a great game. A close hard fought defensive struggle. I had no problem with it.
The real winner: People who skipped this snooze fest of terrible football.
Was forced to watch it because we had dinner at a sports themed restaurant last night. Left when we finished our dinner. As I told my wife, I hoped that both teams lost. Who won?
Its not because it was boring people could not know it was going to be boring beforehand. Its because a lot of us dont want to be preached to a by bunch SJW a-holes.
I am not sick of Tom Brady.
Me either
But Freepers love to poo poo
I didn’t watch though I did pay attention to the LIVE thread here and looked at the score a few times. I have no desire to watch a bunch of folks play when they disrespect me and the president of the United States. The Patriots were ugly to President Trump two years ago when a bunch failed to go to the White House. The Rams said they would not go to the White House if invited. It’s disrespectful. I’m tired of folks accusing the president of racism when no racism exists. I’m tired of the nonsense.
I guess the people want the NFL to be the NBA. No defense but sloppy high scoring games.
I turned it on in the 3rd quarter. Watched the record-breaking punt. Watched an ad celebrating the Social Justice Warriors of the NFL. Turned it off. Didn’t find out who won until I came to work this morning.
Exactly! Offense sells tickets. Defense wins championships.
I don't care much for NFL, even before the media started making a big to-do over the few anti-white kneelers. I love me some college football on Saturdays and spend Sundays in church. But I'll watch the SP and maybe a few other NFL games throughout the year when I've got nothing else to do. And I was very entertained by last night's super bowl. It looked more like the real-man-football I grew up watching than the video game offensive fantasy type football the NFL has been lately.
