For a few long minutes, Camille Herron thought her life could end at any moment.
Crumpled into a ball while hanging helplessly upside down, Herron was trapped inside of her car, which had flipped over after a rogue driver crashed into her. The driver was later charged.
I thought I was going to die from suffocation. I couldnt breathe, and I was worried about the car setting on fire because I could smell oil and smoke, Herron told Runners World. It just smelled like something burning.
The ultrarunner, who recently set the 100-mile world record, was on her way to work at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City on Monday morning when the accident took place. After impact, her vehicle flipped, and landed upside down, in between a concrete pillar and an oil pump.
Luckily, she didnt have to wait long to be rescued. Her Subaru had a Starlink safety and security system, which alerted first responders immediately. Within a few minutes, a rescue team opened her passenger door and lifted her out of the vehicle.
Aside from soreness in her neck, back and ribs, Herron was able to walk away from the crash without any major injuries.
So many things could go wrong or right and impact if you live or not, and so I feel very fortunate for the way my car moved, the way my body contorted, everything, she said. It just seems like a small miracle.

She lived. (Subaru commercial)
I did too when I totaled my Subaru, just a cracked rib...
When did you total your car?
Christmas Eve two years ago.
I got another Subaru...
Wow.
Glad you came out of it well and got another Subaru...
Kind of a busy day on 395. Took me four hours to get a tow truck.
The Barmans (the family in the SUV that struck me) were towed away within the hour, my car was too bent to tow by the first rig that showed up.
That’s the absolute best type of commercial any car manufacturer could make to sell their vehicles.
Wow.
Get any loot for the ordeal?
Enough to buy the next Subaru free and clear.
When I went to clear out the car, I brought a sign I printed and left it on the dash.
It simply said “I lived”
Sweet!
Job going well?
Kid working?
Got laid off, then re-hired as a consultant the very next day. Go figure. Kid’s working. Grandson turns two soon. I’ve got surgery in a couple days.
Grandson?
What kind of surgery?
My wife walked away from a very nasty wreck in her Tahoe. I bought her another one.
Grandson.
Arthroscopic knee surgery, removal of a bit of torn cartilage in and out in a couple hours, take it easy for about three days, no biggie. Old age and obesity caught up with me.
Good! Tends to make one appreciate everything more...
The biggest factor in surviving a crash is having your seat belt on and staying in the vehicle.
