Question: Given the unfortunate experiences folks have been having with the Fall 2018 1809 Update, is this a bad thing?

I don’t use defender and my computer updated successfully yesterday.
Windows 10 is a virus that arrives unwanted and unstoppable.
Is this a Bad ThingTM?
Windows 10 - 64bit - Windows Defender successful updates today. Version 1809 has been rock solid for me.
Easy to delay updates for up to 35 days under Settings>Windows Uodate>Advanced:
Same here, as mine updated this morning and within the last five minutes.
LOL. It's actually a frustration to me -- every day I search the tech news aggregators for articles to post that are about positive, helpful, exciting features of Windows 10 or Microsoft. It's a tough gig. 99% of the Windows/Microsoft related articles out there talk about problems. The positive ones tend to be puff pieces consisting of barely-rewritten splooge from Microsoft Central Marketing.
As the Windows Ping List guy, I get yelled at for being anti-Microsoft when I post a complaint thread, and I get yelled at for being a Microsoft shill when I post a "Hey Great New Feature!" thread. *sigh*
But at least it's a break from the politics and social BS. After all, WinPingList threads are just about computers, and really, that's not such a big deal.
HAL is fighting back.
Used Windows Update just now and had no problem. The people with this problem are probably either having network that is incompatible with Windows Update or did something with Windows’s settings.
Last week, because of a thread on FR, I checked for updates and had a few pending so I processed them. Man, you’d think I was installing W10. It took forever and required several restarts.
Them I came to the computer this morning and damned if there wasn’t more updates to do. No problems other than time spent, though.
Hey buddie I consider your insight invaluable. A good question is should I go with Microsoft Protector, which I’ve been using a while now, or go back to Zone Alarm’s stuff that has protected me for almost two decades without fail? They will not work together.

Going from Windows 7 to 10 was the mistake, but now there is the issue of 7 works with all the older things but you can’t work the newer programs without the newer chips and software. We seem to be seeing people now succumbing to going along with being bullied, leaving all those programs they paid good money for in the dust and now having to expend scads more money just for Microsoft’s sake. Jerks. I’ve been reading the Linux lessons on here closely.
This last big update took my computer out of sync w/ my printer. Had to re-get a driver.
Not always — in my case, the cheapie HP I bought didn’t have enough HD to take on a 10 upDATE. LOL
I think you mean "Microsoft Defender" (not "Protector").
My advice (and what I do) is use the Microsoft-supplied utilities like "Defender" as a baseline defense, and augment them with better-rated tools that are compatible, such as MalwareBytes. Unfortunately, a lot of anti-malware products step on each other. It's a drag that Zone Alarm isn't compatible with Defender -- I used Zone Alarm with great success many years ago, so I understand your interest in running it.
Peripherals like printers often take a hit in updates.
Linux works quite well for a lot of people, as an alternative to Windows (or even Mac). It's different enough to require a little bit of getting used to, but in my observation, moving from Windows to Linux is often less disruptive overall than moving from one version of Windows to another, especially when moving to 8 or 10.
I use Windows, Linux, Mac, and Unix interchangeably throughout my day at work and at home, so I'm the wrong one to ask about how easy it is to switch -- hell, I switch operating systems every two hours, all day, every day.
