He is a jerk. But the airline didnt need to bump him. They could have put the free-riding pilot in the premium seat a couple rows back.

This also shows what the quality of “premium” economy seating is. The pilot who bumped Kasich was allowed to because he needed a “more comfortable seat” so he’d be able to take the flight he was assigned to. Although I fly first class whenever possible, I still try to avoid flying whenever I can because the overall experience is so utterly squalid.
