Sorry, I worked with people from there and it seemed to me that BO was considered a badge of honor (among the men, at least...the woman were a little dowdy but otherwise normal). Not bathing, using deodorant or cleaning the inch-thick layer of dandruff off your shoulders appears to have been a point of pride and showed how pious you were.
These people were not discriminated against because they were Jews, but were removed simply because they -or probably he - smelled bad. I don’t know how their women stand them.
Some people actually DO like the smell of BO, and they think everyone else should, too. I had a roommate at one time who took a shower faithfully, every week and put clean clothes on. But for some reason he refused to use deodorant. I finally got to the point where I flat out told him he stunk, and that if he didn’t use deodorant, he would be asked to leave.
The first thing one smelled upon walking into my home, was BO. HIS BO. He didn’t care apparently because he never did anything different which in my opinion was a passive aggressive, big giant “FU”.
When he left my home, he left absolutely everything he owned, behind. Eventually, I was forced to toss it all in the trash and clean the room he used. NOTHING got rid of that smell. My only option was to renovate the room which I did. It included peeling off wall paper, repainting the walls and ceilings, and even redoing the hardwood floors...in polyurethane to seal them after massive sanding. Finally, that nasty odor was gone, the room smelled fresh, clean, new.
Among his belongings were 6 brand new containers of deodorant...unopened, never used.
His friends would ask “Does he ever shower?” I’d say...yes. Next question “Does he even use soap when he showers?” I’d say, I don’t know, but he never smells fresh like soap after his shower.” He’d purchased 3 bars of soap when he first moved in, there were 2 boxes left of the three, and one melted bar in the shower. But it was the same bar he initially opened a year before.
I haven’t a clue as to what’s with some folks. Even when you tell them they stink, that they need to use soap and deodorant, they don’t. A bottle of shampoo goes down only an inch ...how disgusting!!!! When you have to redo an entire room to get rid of the stench...it’s like...wow..
I too have know many people from the middle east...Jew and Muslim alike, but to find people who refuse to actually clean themselves is pretty rare. There are mentally disturbed people all over the world who refused water, soap and deodorant.
Some folks stink because they don’t wash their clothing properly. If you have nasty body odor, use a double rinse in the machine, and put either a cup of vinegar in the first rinse, or a half a cup of baking soda. It helps to cut body oder in clothing leaving them fresh. Good for cigarette smokers to remember that one, too.
Unfortunately, vinegar doesn’t deodorize wall paper and wood floors, especially old worn out ones.
