Did the President cave on the Continuing Resolution?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_presidential_vetoes | 1/26/2019 | ImpBill

I could use a little help here from some of our Constitutional Scholars.

When President Trump signed a Continuing Resolution yesterday for another 21 days for budgeting the entire Federal Government, did he do so willingly or was his decision forced upon him?

I believe the President has the can return the Bill to Congress, with comments as to why he won't sign it. (VETO) Has to happen within 10 days excluding Sundays.

To sustain his VETO it takes a 2/3's vote from both houses (Representatives and Senate). Otherwise the VETO is over-ridden and the bill becomes law.

Here comes my speculation. I don't have a huge "farm" but I am ready to bet it.

I feel fairly confident that the GOP leaders from both Houses came to the President yesterday and told him a Continuing Resolution, reopening the entire government was going to pass without Wall funding/Border Security funding, and be delivered to him for signature yesterday and that they didn't have the votes to sustain his Veto.

They pushed for him to do so, in order to have the voice vote and no one had to go on record for "continuing the shut down".

Ergo Mr Trump was given the choice to back down in the short term or force the feckless GOP Senators to go on record opposing him.

It seems many of the President supporters in the rank and file have found it easier (lazy) to place the fault with him. When in actuality it was the GOP, once again not following through on campaign promises they all made at one time or another, to yank their rug of support from him.

The GOP representatives have a "on the record" history of pulling the rug out from Mr. Trump since his inauguration.

Any am anxious for considerate thoughts from my fellow Freepers.

dont think so only squelched the narrative(which was getting old) about the poor & financially unsavy government workers that thought they were teflon.

Now they have 3 weeks to get their crap together for when the next shoe drops and I think it will.

I think he caved. There will be no wall. He may as well go on to something else. There is a lot left to do.

………..correct me if I’m wrong but 1/3 plus 1 vote in the House is 145 (rounded).

one third plus 1 in the Senate is 34.

Yes the Republican caucus has RINO’s and Never Trump bought off elitists in both houses but I don’t think as many as your article implies...……….ergo Trump should be able to sustain just about any veto where a 2/3 vote is required.

This fight is going to take a while. The man cant walk on water and we damn sure don’t have a replacement for him. Therefore I wish all conservatives including that loud mouth B ann would just cool it!

“Please be civil in responding.”

This country is being raped daily and you want civility??

While the left is kicking our butts using schoolyard rules we have people like you saying to fight using Queensbury rules.

Yup, he effectively defused the dem cavalcade of evening news sob stories. I suspect the next round will be to simply legally circumvent the obstructionists.

I believe your speculation is probably correct.

The GOPe Senators are just as hostile to President Trump as the Democrats. "Draining the swamp" breaks too many of their rice bowls. They seem perfectly content to let the Democrats call the shots and be the visible front of opposition to all policies from President Trump.

That, sir, is the million dollar question.

I am of the opinion he won't be able to count on enough support from either political party.

I am beginning to fear we wont see a truly secure border and that what I had believed was the last hope for the Republic will ultimately not succeed.

The Swamp may well have neutered his attempt.

Time will tell.

The President did not cave. He is just playing the political game. He is playing both ends in the middle. One would do well to remember President Trump is waist deep in decades of corruption, debauchery, drunkenness, and lying that is now D.C. Look what the left did to a 16 year old high school kid, just for wearing a MAGA hat. The president has to go through 10 times the same thing everyday. There has been much weeping and gnashing of teeth on these threads about President Trump giving in. Its not over yet. Lets stay the course and pray for our president.

Cave is in the eye of the beholder. My thoughts all along had been that the "wall" was nothing more than a campaign rally chant and was never going to be built. Trump rolled the dice but lost. And yes the GOPe wing of Congress told the Pres his veto would be overridden Occam's Razor says the trigger was the implied threat of closing down the nation's transportation system by the ATC's and TSA.

He will build a wall. What’s the difference.

Watch how he manages it.

Very questionable of the President. I give him credit for what he has done.

But he hires people who have _no_ intention of fighting for USConstitution; ending the conquest of DC by enemies foreign and domestic; people who are _part_ of the problem.

Must not be as smart as we were hoping.
