Judging by the photo and his name, I’d say they’re probably ultra-orthodox or possibly Hasidic. Strangely enough, the menfolk often seem to have an aversion to bathing, wearing deodorant or getting their usually heavy woollen clothing cleaned. I worked in a business that had several of employees from Borough Park; one of the men had a private office, and we all dreaded having to go in there because it smelled so bad.

I think failure to take care of hygiene was intended as a declaration of unworldliness and piety.

Oddly enough, I never noticed that the women smelled bad, although then again, one had little contact with the women, who adhered to a strict dress code (always covering their hair, never exposing their elbows) and who usually didn’t work outside the home or at any rate in any non-Orthodox Jewish business.

I had a college roommate 1969-1973 who refused to use deodorant. She claimed she didn’t need it. I had a boyfriend in high school who rarely bathed and didn’t use tooth brush or deodorant. I broke up with him. Thank goodness. I am still friends with the college roommate, Jeanie. She still shows up for a visit at our house without a toothbrush. I keep new ones here just for her. She drinks red wine NON STOP and her teeth are brown.

My first thought when I read the headline was that it was “low” Amish but then I remembered they don’t fly. Same scenario though. Whew, they get rank.

Ultra-Orthodox/Hasidic men generally wear a black cloak, white shirt, black pants, black shoes, and a black hat. The are also forbidden from shaving their beards or the side of their head. The man in the photo looks nothing an ultra-orthodox. Although the woman is wearing a long skirt and sleeves, if she is Ultra-Orthodox, then she would be wearing a wig and/or a head scarf that completely covers her hair. I suspect they are nothing more than hygienically-challenged people who happen to be Jews.

I had a female employee once who had a horrible BO problem. Her co-workers complained to me as well as customers because I was her supervisor. Co-workers and myself dropped hints but it was like water off a ducks back. I finally called her into my office and delicately told her of the issue and asked f it was a medical issue. No she assured me it wasn’t and that she showered daily. Well her scent did change from BO though to a heavy smell of kerosene. Weird. She quit thankfully a month or so later and I make it standard policy you will report to work clean and in proper attire. I had one millennial show up in pajamas for work, she was sent home to change.
