“””I have read only superficially about Bonhoeffer, so am admittedly ignorant about him other than the basic bio and this particular quote. thanks for the Metaxas name.”””
I found some notes on Metaxas from a dig I did in 2012, so the links may not be working, and keep in mind the context of the year 2012:
Metaxas, Colson, Bonhoeffer, Becket and Socrates

Eric Metaxas
“Although popular in the United States, Bonhoeffer scholars have widely condemned Metaxas’s book as unhistorical, theologically weak, and philosophically naive. Professor of German History and Bonhoeffer scholar Richard Weikart has credited Metaxas for his “engaging writing style” in his biography, but he critically assessed its content and characterized it as an appeal to Evangelical Christians in the United States, noting Metaxas’ lack of philosophical, theological, and historical grounding to interpret Bonhoeffer properly.[4] The biography has also been criticized by Bonhoeffer scholars Victoria Barnett[5] and Clifford Green.[6]”

Socrates in the City - by Charles Colson on January 2, 2012 - Catholic Exchange
“Wright shared his views at a New York City gathering called Socrates in the City arranged by my friend and colleague Eric Metaxas, author of the amazing biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Metaxas put the Socrates in the City meetings together to help sophisticated New Yorkers think about the bigger questions of life. Ive spoken there twice, and theyre great.”

“In November 2009, Colson was a principal writer and driving force behind an ecumenical statement known as the Manhattan Declaration calling on evangelicals, Catholics and Orthodox Christians not to comply with rules and laws permitting abortion, same-sex marriage and other matters that go against their religious consciences.[48] He previously had ignited controversy within Protestant circles for his mid-90s common-ground initiative with conservative Roman Catholics Evangelicals and Catholics Together, which Colson wrote alongside prominent Roman Catholic Richard John Neuhaus. Colson was also a proponent of the Bible Literacy Project’s curriculum The Bible and Its Influence for public high school literature courses.[49]”

Eric Metaxas. Interesting links you provide. I had read the reviews about the Bonhoeffer book. The people I know who have read it appreciated it. I think he writes for the every man but more in depth than most things you find on Christian book store shelves. I have read that Metaxas quit the Evangelical Immigration Roundtable (or some similar name) when he learned Soros was a contributor. He was quoted as saying that anything Soros is involved with is NOT anything he can support. However, Russell Moore is still involved I believe.
THank you for all that info. You are a mine.
Excellent digging!
