I have long wondered why the amazing technological developments of the past half century had almost no impact on the family bottom line. Around 1960, at a time when only one parent worked, we were told that the 20-hour work week was not far away. Instead now, both parents -- if they can actually afford to be parents -- work 60 hours to make ends meet. A hidden tax has apparently enriched some people to the tune of $21T.
