A suit for defamation is going to require the proof or estimate of damages. I can't think of any "actual" damages realized by the defendants, so the focus will be on "presumed" damages like colleges that might deny them acceptance or potential employers who might deny them employment because of this defamation.

Whatever happens, it's going to be a lot of fun running a tally of the potential costs.

I’m not a lawyer but not all damages are compensatory, no? There are punitive awards too. How can you begin to try to quantify how trouble this has and this will cause those kids?

You can’t prove a particular dollar amount of reputation damage has occurred. You can only estimate, take a wild guess, or arbitrarily fix a number.

But there are at least four distinct parties who can sue for such damage in this case - the Diocese, the school, the primary target (Sandmann), and the Hodge kid who got doxxed just for resembling Sandmann.
