Johnny Cash recorded “Southern Accents.”
Lineman for the County by Glen Campbell
I don't think it was ever released on a studio album, but it made its way onto his "Decade" greatest hits 2-CD set.
I love Flatt & Scruggs. My husband and I are big bluegrass fans, and we have the opportunity to see some great concerts in the Charlotte area.
That’s my favorite Tom Petty song!
Another great country song from a non-country band:
Pearl of The Quarter - Steely Dan
Skunk Baxter’s pedal steel is exquisite on that one.
“Wichita Lineman”
“Hard to pick one from Glen Campbell ... maybe Wichita Lineman
That is a great song, and when he so sadly died that seemed to be the one most mentioned. I think it is his greatest song, and I do heart Glen Campbell muchly.
“Gentle on my mind” is problematical as some say these days. It is a lovely sounding song, but listen to the words. It was really an anthem of the new non-committal world that was coming to the fore in those days and that has wrought so much destruction since.
The original commercial country music, ‘20s through the ‘40s, wasn’t so self-conscious. Lots of cowboy songs, blues, swing jazz, and gospel that are gone now.
I agree. “Gentle on My Mind” is, “I’m a loser who will never commit, but have sex with me, anyway.” Same as Zac Brown Band’s “Colder Weather” and a zillion other songs.
“Galveston” is about fidelity.
Good song Bump!
Great for you!
Old country and bluegrass are almost indistinguishable.
Off topic: the Rolling Stones’ “Let It Bleed” album put “country” into rock and saved it IMO. You can only go so far with just blues- well as it may be played.
He also wrote City of New Orleans
Also a great song. Big hit for Arlo Guthrie, no?
Until Glen Campbell died, I didn’t realize what an incredible instrumentalist he was. My father had lots of records and 8-track tapes, so I knew Glen Campbell’s songs, but I didn’t appreciate the guitar-playing at the time.
Yes, although the first version I heard was by John Denver, who ought to be on this list.
I like Whiskey Lullaby.
The basic song types and structures are the same, but the instrumental and vocal styles were distinct.
That’s a beautiful song. Allison Krauss is a spectacular vocalist.
However, that’s a drinking tragedy, not a drinking comedy.
