The guy on the right is saluting with his left hand and has something in his right hand. I’d love to know why he’s using the left hand. I guess it’s some custom and courtesy used only by the Navy.
He’s playing the bosun’s pipe, used to pipe commanders and significant others on and off the boat. You’ve probably heard that whistling sound in the movies.
He is enlisted so that is no glove on his left hand. Looks to be a kerlix bandage. Unable to hold his bosun's pipe in his left hand he uses his right. Left-hand salute is authorized because the right is necessarily engaged.
