The old Tappan Zee Bridge in New York's Hudson Valley went crashing into the Hudson River late Tuesday morning.

Traffic was backed up in both directions about 10:50 a.m. as explosives were used to tear down the eastern portion of the bridge. Video clips posted to Instagram show the bridge, first built in 1952, plummet into the water, sending up massive clouds of gray smoke.

“...the bridge, first built in 1952...”

Was it built again some other year?

Progress I guess, but so many times I crossed her, kind of sad to think of that happening. I never thought I’d live to see it “gone” ....

“1952? WTF?”

By 1952 we were razing great structures and building cheap, ugly crap. Look at the razing of the old (NY) Penn Station, and the horrific concrete slab they replaced it with. I’m surprised the Tappan Zee bridge stood for as long as it did!

How is this cost-effective?

The same hoisting equipment will be used, but now the rigging will be done underwater by divers.

Tax dollars at work?

Sigh

The bridge I used to drive over between CT and my homeland on my long weekends.
